How to use Notifications/Subscriptions

Why bother at all?

The subscription system allows you to be notified automatically (via email) when additions and updates to the content of the site are made. Put simply, it can allow you to receive email showing information which you may be interested in, without you having to visit the site to look for such information. It is fairly powerful, with numerous configurable options and for the same reason perhaps a bit daunting for some. Below I will attempt to provide a user guide.

View and change your current settings

Links to edit your account and view current subscription settings:

  • NOTE: You are not logged-in.

  • Use the My account link first - Check that your email address is set correctly there. Then a little way down there's a section marked Messaging and Notifications settings -- make sure that the Default send interval is not set to Never.

  • Use the My subscriptions link above. You will see a summary page showing what (if any) subscriptions you have enabled. Near the top you will see links: Overview | Author | Content type | Groups | Tags | Thread which you can click to set notification settings in various ways:

Overview

Shows an overview of all notifications settings.

Author

Shows which authors (if any) you have notifications set for. If set, you will be notified by email for any post made by that member. You can unset them here if required.

Content type

Shows and allows you to change which Content Types you have notifications set for. For example, a News Item is one content type, a Poll is another.

Groups

Allows you to see and set which Groups you receive notifications for. This shows Groups of which you are a member, and allows you to be notified for all posts in those Groups.

Tags

Allows you to view and set notifications for tags - these are effectively categories of information that you are interested in (relates to forums, also News Item posts.)

Thread

Shows which discussion threads (if any) you have notifications set for. If set, you will be notified by email for any comment made in that thread. You can unset them here if required.

Setting notifications by thread and author

When viewing relevant types of post (forum, groups, news items, etc.) a menu will appear in the left side-bar marked Subscriptions (if no options appear below it, click that heading to "open" the menu.)

There you will see options such as:
* This post
* Posts of type Blog entry
* Posts by author-name

Tick the required options and then click the Update button shown immediately below them.

It's also possible to subscribe to author by going to the author's profile page. For example on my profile page - some way down you will see a section marked Subscriptions where you can Subscribe to all posts by ng

NOTES

  • Due to a limitation of the system, you may receive multiple copies of the same notification. This can happen if for example you have subscribed to posts of type Blog Entry and posts by author JohnBloggs - when JohnBloggs posts a Blog Entry this system will most likely notify you twice, for totally logical reasons of course, nonetheless a bit of a pain.

  • If set wrongly, it's quite possible that the system may send you large numbers of emails per day, for example you might receive a notification for every comment made anywhere on the site, yet possibly duplicated due to the reason given above.

  • Currently subscriptions are processed and emails are sent out every 15 minutes. So, it may take up to 15 minutes after a post is made before your receive the email for it.

  • This is a separate similar system on the public site, but with fewer options available.

  • A few links which work when the post is viewed directly on the site may not work or may be missing in the email version of the post. There are good reasons for this which would be rather difficult to explain (its to do with relative links and PHP.)

Comments enabled here, only for directly related questions please.
