There's a hell of a lot here to read, within only a matter of days. I think we need some summary views, statistics, opinion polls and such. What do you need to see? It's interesting to read through people posts and comments, but can quickly get tiring, especially if you're looking for specific information.

Some initial ideas of mine - they may not be good ones, but are all technically feasible:

Opinion polls - What topics (and what questions)?

Summary views and statistics - E.g. how many users here, how much total money lost, average amount lost. Maybe even a geographical breakdown, breakdown by nationality, etc.

Files - Ability to upload documents?

Structure of forums - What topics and sub-topics? Anything missing? (maybe an "emotional support" topic, and probably one for this topic, i.e. site features.)

Contributors I've already seen a few offers of help. There probably ought to be a "legal" page and "privacy policy" on here. Does anyone have time and suitable experience to do those?

Elsewhere (in the wrong place!) dustyourselfdown ask for rss support. We have the technology, but I haven't set it up as I think it would be used by only a small number of users (the more advanced ones in terms of internet/IT literacy.) We have a lot people here who wouldn't have the faintest idea what to do with an rss feed.

Would you see value in a listing of items pending/requiring action prominently displayed so as many members as possible tackle all and none get lost?
How many balls are there in the air at the moment? -

Ng, apologies for keeping on with this.... is it possible to add a 'petition sign up' button onto the home page?

At the moment sign ups are going through to an email address I setup earlier. Some would prefer the signups to go through this site. I think this is a great idea if it can be done easily and quickly as time is of the essence in order for us to get the petition delivered.

Is this possible?

This is me trying to cater for various requests...

  • User data - I am not sure if it's correct to ask users for info such as their location, nationality etc. However, we could do it, make it optional. I think that will be my approach - disclosure is optional.

  • View all posts by user, etc. Feasible, but requires features I currently don't have access to. I am thinking of activating the "blog" feature, which allows individual users to make blog entries and handle comments. Possibly better would be "Organic Groups" - consult www.drpal.org for full info.

I have been following (albeit reasonably silently) these forums hourly since mid last week. I would really appreciate being able to see all comments by occamrazor, expat and monkeyface in a separate area. Possibly there are some other significant contributors who should also be singled out. I personally would appreciate a view from them on where we are, what overall progress is being made, and their opinions and advice are on what we should do. I am suddenly finding it difficult to follow their personal views on the key issues in all the noise on the site. I think they are representative of my position, and would like to be ready to action on their advice. It would be great if they had a restricted edit page (open read) to write their views on the situation for us all to access.

In addition, I think it would be valid to start categorising users into nationality, location, and amounts lost. I would be happy to provide those details.

and once again...thanks for doing this

liebenk - Thanks, but I don't have any particular access to information, I am just analysing things here and off the net as I go along. I'm not currently in the UK or Isle of Man so am watching from afar so to speak.
I don't however, feel the need to categorise people as such though - if people want to volunteer their details they can always do so in the sums involved forum or elsewhere. I just think we have to respect people's wish to remain anonymous if that is what they choose.
It might be useful however, to be able to click on a username and see all their previous posts....

Can we have a link (from their profile) to show all the postings from that user? A total number of postings could be handy (and simple?) too? Sometimes its useful to read all the posts of someone who seems to "have their head screwed on".

Equally there have been a few posts on here from what look like trolls. It would be handy to see if their other postings have the same flavour - or if they were just having a bad day (like the rest of us!)

Maybe an expanded profile whereby people can say country and region they are based.
Could be usleful for starting to orgainse any meetings etc

Also a forumn that can only be updated by a few power users, so that its not polluted with hysteria, hype or other distractions. If people want to add something they e mail it to a few power users who can consider whether its relevant or not

Is it possible to increase the file upload attachment size? I have a zip file of all the Kaupthing documents from the website I'd like to upload, it's 5.7mb. Or advise how else I can put it up?
Maybe best is if I email it to the admin and they host it directly?

It's possible to increase, but I can't do it without extra admin access that I don't have yet. Can you split it into chunks, each less than 2MB?

Also, I'm not sure what the hosting situation is - we may have some storage limits (though these days most accounts offer loads of space.)

Mat and Greg? Are you here? What's the hosting situation?

I could split it, but then

I agree with you all on the following
1) A closed forum with ability to vote
2) An email system for distribution - One idea would be Yahoo Groups where we can send emails to all concerned who have registered
3) We need to hold an Audio conference.
4) We need a representative on behalf of the group.

As far as I know and having read about countries like Argantine and others they can not borrow money if they have an outstanding money owed. We need to look at collecting our money regardless of how long it takes. Countries are suppose to be AAA rated for a reason and as a matter of fact, All loan costs to the Iceland will be hindered or at least charged at a higher interest if they have bad debt. We can not just accept the liquidators agreement and indemnify Iceland because they need to make good on their promises and after all we are talking about an amount lower than a £100m so they should pay up as it will hardly make them poor! The sums the UK is owed are far higher.

We also have an option for the European courts too, this may take a long time, but we will still get some interest back on our cash even if it only the current present value (i.e, protected against inflation!)

I do not know but may be I am too optimisitc, but we need to fight for ourselves since the UK is not doing it on our behalf and we seem to be left here to hang dry. I also feel that the benefit for the UK will be the fact that they can get rid of those off-shore havens and in the future depositors would choose the UK over the Channel Islands. May be they should go back to farming and fishing if they can not protect us sufficiently.

Thanks

Andy

Another possibility a self help group for those who have no/ very little skills to assist in current crisis ie legal / financial / IT skills, but could possibly help others in other area's

I'll start it off :-

My background is Marine / Mechanical engineering & on-shore for the last 25 years in project management :-

I'd also be interested to hear from anyone in a similar position to the one I find myself in as there has to be someway we can help each other or just simply for support.

at the present time

very little liquid asset (cash)

no income (this would have come from the lost deposit)

no home (just bought former commercial building in France, effectively just a shell, conversion & refurbishment would have come from the deposit - had a corner of a barn set aside for basically camping. Ok in summer will be hell in winter)

mid fifties (not much chance of getting regular employment)

I'm in Uk at the moment but will be going back to France (wife now going to stay in UK with family) in the next couple of days - I'm doing no good here and I've got to keep busy -- at something.

Also - please - a "strictly business" only site - no matter how thin - no personal stuff.

We could simply ask if users are account holders. The issue here is privacy and security - that information could be potentially abused by evil third parties if they ever gained access to the data. Arguably the risk is tiny, compared with the losses we are all dealing with in reality. Nonetheless I think we'd need a proper statement about privacy and other legal stuff before collecting data of this type. To some extent, it's already happening with the the "Sums involved" thread, but asking the question directly would be slightly different.

I would suggest we have an "account holders" area. Anyone who asks for access is given it. By implication, they are account holders, but we're not specifically asking. The same implication applies to the whole site really, why else are people here?

How about a section away from the "open" pages where we the people who are actually affected and lost the money can have a rant & rave and general moan. Try and raise our spirits in other ways.

One of the ways I cope with bleak situations is to try & make light of them this obviously doesn't appeal to everyone and certainly not in an open forum, I can see and fully accept this. However I'm also sure that many depositors have not told friends / relations or neighbours of the predicament they are in, this could be for many reasons - the feeling that somehow it's their fault / shame / whatever there could a million reasons. Therefore a section in here somewhere just for us we're all in the same boat we can talk / correspond freely with each other.

Good idea since this is a CRISIS.
Note that there are 44 users and all on line. Where else....

There are a lot of letters on this site. would be good to separate the technical useful stuff from the more personal stuff. There is so much to read and can get overwhelming.

My feelings still tell me that we will get 100% back.
Stay calm. Breath deeply...... there is a chance for success.

There are potential investors and governments are on the case?

Remember Kaupthing IOM isn't officially wound up till the 24th October.

That's easy to do, and any of the existing forum topics can easily be converted to "private".

So, this would be stuff that's not visible to site visitors who haven't registered ("guests") - correct? Once anyone registers they will be able to see those areas? Or is further sub-division needed?

Now we all know we are not alone, which is a great comfort.

Would it be possible to introduce a new section where only users who are "experts" (eg legal, financial or eg nominated by users) on our predicament could post and update on developments etc which could be viewed by ALL users (and guests) but free of the clutter of comments and replies from the rest of us (who could continue to post in the existing sections) ?

I realise there are drawbacks to such an idea, but, come Monday the place is going to be swamped with comments.

My thoughts are on the same lines... A lot of people coming here are probably looking for news, hard facts, etc and would prefer not to wade through the clutter.

Any idea which users should be given special rights? (e.g. to post in the "experts" forum.)

Another solution is to "tag" individual posts with key-words, e.g. "news", "contacts" and then have views of the posts by topic (as opposed to the hierarchical structure of the "Forums".) Individual posts (not individual "comments") can be easily shown on the front page, where they're sorted by date order, so newest at the top, conventionally.

This is all easy stuff to set up, at a technical level - the hard part is deciding how best to structure things, e.g. what key-words to set up as "tags" (they can be either pre-defined or open for people to put whatever they want.)

Anyway, in summary I think the front page of the site should show the key information, including important news and events with easy access to relevant forums. I'll add the "exports" area (should comments be allowed in there?).

I think we need a "tab" on the top of these pages leading to a section where people can post links to media articles.

The name of the medium could be in the subject line and the link in another line.

The comments section below that could be reserved for a precis of the news contained in that article/news report
