SENIOR CITIZENS PARTY WILL SUPPORT KAUPTHING IOM DEPOSITORS

The Senior Citizens Party (www.seniorcitizensparty.org.uk) was formed in January 2004 to represent the needs and concerns of all Seniors age 50 or over and although most of our activities up to now have been involved with UK residents we are keen to represent the needs and concerns of British citizens wherever they may live throughout the world. We are particularly concerned where there appears to be evidence of discrimination against British citizens who live abroad and we shall be reporting this to the recently formed Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).

We have received a number of emails from Kaupthing IOM Depositors and we believe that the Government should guarantee their savings in the same way that they have guaranteed the savings of depositors in other Icelandic banks. As a fully registered political party we have access to Government Ministers and Party Leaders and we shall be happy to lobby them on your behalf. Obviously the more depositors who contact us the more influence we shall have with Government and politicians, so if you have not already contacted us please send an email to: kaupthingiom(?)seniorcitizensparty [dot] org [dot] uk You may also telephone me on 0845 260 1215.

Yours sincerely

Grahame Leon-Smith, Founder and Party Leader Senior Citizens Party

This is the latest email form the Senior Citizens Party. Please read, but In short they want to know if you were refused a UK bank account, they are also interested in replies from MPs

By the way please contact them even if you are younger than 50

Dear Seniors Abroad

Attached please find the second issue of Senior EP Voice which I believe will solve the fundamental problem which led to the appalling Kaupthing IOM disaster and the similar Landsbanki Guernsey one. It was very clear from the hundreds of Seniors who emailed me, that after 9/11 and the suicide bombings in London, all the main UK banks decided to demand a recent utility bill sent to you an an address in the UK before they would allow you to open a UK bank account. This was clearly discrimination of the most blatant kind, which I certainly knew nothing about, and I am amazed that they managed to get away with it. It would be very helpful if you would email me and let me know if you were refused a UK bank account, and which bank was involved. As a direct result of this discrimination British Citizens living abroad who wanted a British bank account had no alternative but to open an account with an offshore bank, either in the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands. Such banks often offer a slightly higher rate of interest, precisely in order to attract depositors, but of course they are smaller and have fewer assets and therefore the financial risk is inevitably greater. The vitally important factor, however, is that these banks are not covered by the UK Government's compensation scheme, and if anything does go wrong, as it did in this case, the banks themselves, both of which had been acquired by the Kaupthing Iceland Bank are at risk and so are all the depositors funds.

Thus said, however, I nevertheless suspect that the UK Government and the Financial Services Authority must bear some responsibility for what has happened and I am continuing to pursue this, but it will undoubtedly be difficult to provide. I believe that our policy of every individual saver emailing his or her constituency MP, informing them of this disgraceful situation and asking them to take the matter up with the Chancellor, Alistair Darling, is the best way to proceed at the moment, and the next step will be to arrange for an Early Day Motion (EDM) to be put down in the House of Commons and force a debate on the whole issue. But we need much more support ! It is estimated that there are between 8,000 and 10,000 depositors with the Kaupthing IOM bank and about 2,000 with Landsbanki Guernsey, but only about 300 have emailed me re Kaupthing IOM (and only half a dozen re Landsbanki Guernsey), and only a small fraction of these have sent me copies of their letters to the MPs and copies of their replies. I have to be honest, this is simply not enough to convince the majority of the 646 MPs that this is a very serious matter which must be pursued. It would be completely counterproductive if we put down an EDM and only a handful of MPs are prepared to sign it.

I am afraid you must double, and indeed treble, your efforts to contact any depositors you know and persuade them to join our campaign by going to our website at: www.seniorcitizensparty.org.uk and filling in the online form in the "Join Us" section, and they can find their "Constituency MP" by entering the postcode of their last UK address into the box in the "Democracy section. Please note that no cost is involved as we waive the £12 annual subscription for people living abroad. Our aim is to shame the Government into admitting that the £550 million transferred from the Isle of Man still belongs to the savers and should be returned to them. The Administrators are powerless because their contract prohibits them from making any payments whatsoever without the specific authority of the Treasury.

Senior Citizens Party - waste of time?

This latest confirms my feeling (from previous communications) that these people are not doing anything to help us and that we are wasting our time with them.

The initial contact indeed sounded hopeful when they said "As a fully registered political party we have access to Government Ministers and Party Leaders and we shall be happy to lobby them on your behalf."

But I see no sign whatsoever of them doing anything of the sort. Quite the opposite, they are asking US to do it for them. We have of course been doing this for the last 3 months and don't need the SCP to tell us to do it! As I see it, their main objective is not to publicise our cause but rather to get us to publicise their party.

From my unfortunate dealings with them I agree entirely.

I dislike "single issue" politics anyway. I see this crew as an ego trip for the ones at the top of the heirarchy - and the one at the top was f-ing rude when I asked to be removed from the mailing list.

I find it quite distasteful also that on their web page they are asking for donations to help in their aim to assist Kaupthing depositors.

Not just that - what they state as the reason can & will be disputed by HMG or anyone else -

"Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling who banned people working or living abroad from having a UK bank account in which the Government guarantees their savings if the bank goes bankrupt. All these people had their UK bank accounts closed and were forced to place all their savings in an off-shore bank. Most of them wanted to stay with an English bank and were advised to put their money into the Isle of Man Bank, which was subsequently acquired by the Icelandic Kaupthing Bank.

No they didn't -- the banks wouldn't open accounts effectivly the same thing, but HMG apart from introducing money laundering regs had nothing to do with the banks banning NEW accounts.

Received this reply today:-

Dear ?

I am at the moment ploughing through over 100 emails from savers who have lost their money in the Kaupthing IOM scandal. The Senior Citizens Party which I founded in 2004 is determined to do everything possible to get them their money back, but clearly I shall not be able to reply to each and every email individually.

What a great idea - I'll vote for them, especially given this Government's total disregard of the pensioners' plight with crashing interest rates, taxed interest even at the most insignificant level, and paltry State pensions - not to mention the consistent denial by various governments of increase-parity for Expats in most overseas countries. We've all paid in the same, in good faith, after all.

Expats, perhaps those of us who can still vote, (within the 15-year rule) as well as those resident in UK should point this out to them.

I've written to them too.
