Post from Channel 4 - We potentially need more people

Hi,

I'm a producer working for Channel 4 news. We would like to do a TV interview this afternoon with someone who had savings of over 50,000 pounds with KSFIOM - and who lives within a few hours of London. It'd would make up part of a news item looking at the situation in which you find yourselves - and exactly what is being done about it.

Please email me on joanna [dot] blundell(?)itn [dot] co [dot] uk.

Many thanks in advance,
Joanna

One of the other depositors has made a comment that C4 will be looking for more interviewers tomorrow or later in the week. Please contact Joanna if you are interested.

Did local news in Yorkshire but I am not all that happy with it, they edited out lots of facts about the IOM being in a totaly different situation to the rest of the UK and it was not clear enough that we are not being looked after. C4 was much better. Oh well. EXPAT.... YOUR INTERVIEW WAS GREAT!

The money section of the Guardian have been speaking to me. I am confident that they will be a bit more clear, I have talked my mum into being more involved so that they can see the whole family that are affected, as you know this means everything to us. Anyone who wants to do it with us then please get in contact.

I have a lot of hope that this will be sorted out in the very near future. The financial situation in Europe seems to be looking up and that can only be good for us, also the UK and IOM can not have us all loose out 50K is not good enough and we will all fight this. I am sure people are working behind the scenes on our behalf... i just wish they would let us know a bit more! (sorry about spelling)

Was lucky enough to get a question put to Paul Lewis by Bill Turnbull on the BBC Breakfast programme regarding our plight. Screened at 6.40 am UK time. He said that situation re Guarantee remains clear but that savers are covered by the IoM DG. We're not, but good publicity anywaz.

May I suggest that any interview plays up ONLY the human misery angle, the desapair and the LACK of real information. WE are normal people who were looking for safety for our families etc
We are DEPOSITORS and NOT investors
The IoM branch of KSF was/is a sound, profitable bank, a safe haven with 2 fromer IoM ministers on the board, it was caught in a crossfire between UK and Iceland. THe financial statemants are a matter of public record and there for all to see

PLEASE TRY NOT TO MAKE JUDGEMENTS on the rights and wrongs, please do not suggest we rape and pillage IoM, dunno about Icealnd yet, but i'll think on it!

Before my beeb NW interview this morning the IoM gov rang and I had a brief and concise word in an official shell like!! YOU need to say the all effrts are being used and all in UK and IoM are constructively involved. I hope they listened and I hope they can respond.
May I also save that Dave Banner and his wife were very brave and went on as well at some personal dignity loss.

AS soon as somebody actually sees it loves me or hates me for I said cut and paste the link, as many as possibble hit it, that may get in national and international exposure which is what we want

You are embarrasing my people please I need no plaudits and I do not beg, I am one of you and will fight and fight.

In am certain that there are UK Treasury people on the island. cool, calm, diplomatic pressure, there is bad blood that has to be wiped away first, i am sure you can see that

Thanks to all my friends, I can't remeber your aliases now but you know because you talk to me. And my wife has eaten for the first time in three days, so there's progress!!!

To the gy was has just arrived back on IOM and has a garden I am at the sefton and yes sir I do understand the game!

Correct. It was only ever the assets of Landsbanki (and related assets of the Icelandic Central Bank and the Icelandic financial services commission) that were frozen under the anti-terror law.

No part of Kaupthing had its assets frozen at any point it this.

The UK arm of Kaupthing, KSF, was merely put into administration.

I also contacted Lucy at BBC North West the other day by email outlining my situation and the fact I stand to loose $525,000 I only deposited for a week with KSF (IOM) because I thought it was safer than being with a currency broker in the current climate (good call !)
Prior to sending the funds to the USA to start a new life there
They have been today for an interview and took some footage that will be aired on BBC North West tonight.
They were more interested in the how this has affected myself and my family as opposed to my opinion on to who I feel is to blame and what should be done about it
There questioning was very sincere and I just talked openly about the devastating effect this loss will have on me, my family and our future.
I appreciated there efforts to portray the human side of this tragedy.

Excellent work by everyone with regards to the interview and articles that we appear to be getting out into the public forum
Plaease however be very midful about what is said, and how some peoples stories may not get the right type of interest and angle for our cause. Whilst we are all obviously deeply affected by this incident, some people's stories are a lot more suitable than others. What ever you do acknowledge that we aprreciate there are many other loosers (e.g. charities etc) but that everone else is being represented and we seem to be the forgotten few. I will be happy to discuss any questions and strategies for any persons involvement with the media. According to the angle they are going for this will need to be taylored.

I have also spoken to Poorpoppy and she has informed me that channel 4 have now been in touch and are looking at flying over to France today to do an interview with her and her husband. I think we should all thank her for her donation and say how proud of them we are.

UK Banking Groups and the IoM

  • Anonymous

  • Sun, 12/10/2008 - 21:11

UK banks and building societies have been touting Isle of Man subsidiaries on their websites and elsewhere because they make use of the moneys that are deposited there by lending the funds on at a profit.

It is disingenuous for UK financial institutions to market the IoM on their UK websites as being "part of" their financial groups yet for the UK government to walk away from IoM subsidiaries when there are difficulties.

KSF (IOM) was not a subsidiary of KSF (UK) but it was effectively run as part of the KSF UK group and the proceeds of our deposits were lent to UK investors, so it is unfair for the UK government to ignore the financial reality of there having been one KSF UK/IOM group, and only protect KSF (UK) depositors.

It would be interesting to know what proportion of KSF (IOM) depositors were UK citizens. Practically all of them judging by this website. The separation of the UK and IoM as financial centers is in reality a myth. They were run as one family.

As Oxford points out, clearly there are double standards but the lack of concern for KSFIOM depositors although most of us are UK tax payers who have signed up to disclosure for tax purposes - just unbelievable. I must add that most of the compensation schemes should kick in when banks fail out of poor admin or similar reasons. However this is an exceptional circumstance and a part of the global meltdown and in particular our situation related to a turbulent relationship between UK and Iceland. Instead of separating out depositors from the UK division, the UK govt should have represented IOM interests as well and guaranteed our money similar to the rest of the country.

I agree that we should stress the horrendous losses some are suffering - lifetime savings - there's a tremendous human dimension to all this.

Also, we are not seeking to avoid tax by putting money in the IoM - we're not allowed to open savings accounts in the UK and we are required to declare the interest on our tax returns.

I think we should avoid the term "investors", which better applies to those who own shares in the parent company. We are “savers” or “depositors”. We are not fat cats who are investing in a tax haven.

Dear Sirs,

We live in Spain, and have a large part of our savings, from 35 years of HARD WORK, invested in Kaupthing Singer & Friedlander (Isle of Man) Limited, it cannot be replaced at our age and we placed it in this bank in the I-O-M as we were told the financial system was very sound and were given a copy of the parent companies guarantee?

It seems that the UK, Dutch, Icelandic and German governments have agreed to cover 100% of savings with this bank in their respective countries, but the Isle of Man Government will not be doing the same with ours and others peoples savings invested in this Island.

By the way, we also have friends who have GBP 100k invested in the same bank, which was the proceeds of their house sale much of which was needed next week for the completion on the purchase of their new property - God only knows what they will do now?

It is therefore QUITE CLEAR that money is less safe when invested in banks on this Island although we were led to believe from all THEIR publicity and that of the banks that it was a reputable financial centre.

After this, and the adverse publicity of people loosing their life's savings by depositing their money with banks in this financial centre it must be quite clear that depositors should TOTALLY AVOID using banks that come under the I-O-M governance, as there is MUCH MORE risk and everything to loose, when the same investment could of been totally safe had it been invested through one of the UK´s branches of the SAME bank.

This must SURELY be the start of the END of the I-O-M as a banking centre as NO-ONE NOW, in their right sense of mind, will be depositing monies with banks on this Island, taking such un-necessary risks with their savings.

We also have some money with the B & B, again in an account in the I-O-M, (although a lesser sum) and this we will be transferring out to an on-shore account immediately we have the new account open, so we are sure that it will be safe.

Its a very sorry state of affairs when people led to believe their life savings were safe have been so VERY BADLY LET DOWN through their investments in the Isle of Man... and this should be highlighted by the TV and press.

Yours Sincerley,

As long as the UK public feel that here is a hard working person just like anybody else, wanting to run a life and provide for one's family with their life in ruins from this situation - just like EXPAT's emotional interview on the BBC, the media will expand on it to attract attention to our group and our website - I would say mention our website for people to log on to the stories and read.

I need to talk with the other admins about this. Some people know to type their address in a obfuscated format, and know to use an address that they can't be personally identified from. But some might put something like gordon [dot] brown(?)no10 [dot] gov [dot] uk which would make them identifiable and leave them open to getting spammed. So, it's easier just to say "don't post your email address". But, if you're sure you know what you're doing, feel you can trust the other party, etc, then I don't really object. When I get a chance there'll be a full posting on the topic.

Thank you for offering.

Points we think should be stressed.

  1. KSF completely solvent company before UK Iceland assests frozen, which caused KSF IoM failure.
  2. Customers were guaranteed by parent company off all deposits in case of subsidiary failure.
  3. Peoples entire lifesavings at stake, lots of them retired.
  4. Iceland government firstly agreed guarantee but then pulled-out.
  5. IoM government asked UK government to represent this issue allthough we are worried that we are forgotten as
    nothing is mentioned.
  6. Mention this site for stressed depositors
  7. ** Not sure whether to mention that some depositors are willing to leave deposits in bank for a period of time if central bank can guarantee deposits, which will restore faith in the IoM banking system, as well as give the government or bank or new possible owners breathing space to resolve issues. (what do you think??)

Any more suggestions welcome.

I think we should not say more than this. Too much information on TV and the important message may be watered down in the public and the govt. memory. The points above are all that should be stressed. Although I think we should not generalise for many others regarding point 7. Personally I would be willing to do it though if it would help the cause.

I would be careful with that one. Not sure this is accurate
I have managed to open an account in HSBC UK in Chiswick last month. You can but need to complete an R85 frorm I think from memory so that you are not having tax deducted automatically. Also you need to prove residency off-shore example visa and utility and bank statement proving your address. Again from memory. I only encountered this issue with our beloved KSF IOM when I tried to open an account in the UK. Stupid me, I got gready and put the whole lot in IOM because they gave the best interest rates! I keep kicking myself every minute!

There is another side to consider.

Banks make a profit from using the money deposited with them (or at least they hope to).

If they have done that business in the UK they pay around 30% corporation tax on the profits.

In the Isle of Man, the corporation tax on a bank is only 10%.
