Slack journalism at it's finest. The article should have been entitled, No Hope For Isle of Man Savers!
Can she not see that the ghastly £150 million, laughingly otherwise known as "compensation" is just an ill disguised "bribe" to satisfy a percentage of savers with the bank, while trying to make the IoM look good and a "safe haven" - cue hysterical and sick laughter from the wings! £600 million of ours IS in the UK, plus an additional £105 million identified by the liquidator i.e. a total of £700+ million of our money, is identifiable, is there, but currently locked up.....

How can a journalist not pause, reflect on their own article and the numbers that they themselves identified, and think - " hang on, we know there is at least £700 million "around" so why are these guys only getting circa 20% of that identifiable money back?" If you take out the money that the liquidator has identified (£105 million), then that would make the "offer" just £45 million!

I just hope this is not the prelude to an IoM and UK spin offensive, whereby "they" "think" that this sort of news in tomorrow's morning papers and daytime TV will reassure little England that all is being done to guarantee 100% of British depositors money.

Well guess what? Breaking News! I am British, a British Resident and a British tax payer on all my IoM savings and I have, as it stands lost 100% of my savings there! I will be chocking on my cornflakes that "potentially" my life savings are going to go to ING in Holland, to cover other British mainland depositors and next door neighbours while I go to the wall to bail them out with my money that was expropriated by the UK.

My apologies to the journalist in question but our story is obviously not out there in full as yet, and this sort of reporting does nothing to enlighten casual readers or appraise them of the actual situation.

We definitely haven't got the message across. I know all about the politics etc etc and the credit crunch but I certainly won't be crunching on my cornflakes tomorrow no money to buy any breakfast. Tomorrows meals are veg brought by neighbours. Why oh why won't anybody believe me. Just heard on Channel 4 that talks between Iceland and UK have broken down. What does that mean other than it was time for dinner and drinks. One day I will look back at this and say..............L

Cheer up Poppy, i dont think our fight is with Iceland, its with the UK goverment (not sure which is more futile). I am furious about the UK's response to this, some of the ideas going through my head are not good (rather vindictive and nose cutting to spite face) but we will not give in!!!!
The UK goverment is trying to use the IOM's money as a bargaining tool in all this.....only trouble is its not theirs to bloody use.

Gordon Brown, you may be in trouble but you are not dragging down 7000+ depositors plus their families with you. If need be we will take you down first, this site has power, at the moment its being used to try and get our meney back but if need be we could use it for other purposes!!!(no not terrorist Gordon...so dont even try that one!!!!)

We have no choice other than to keep it together and fight all the way. We owe this not just to ourselves and families but also to all the guys (Expat et al) who have put so much work into representing our collective interests. Divided we will most certainly fall.

Don't know if anyone has followed the threads/stories circulating indicating that OUR money may form part of a political settlement between the UK and Iceland? Surely Flash Gordon is not trying to steal from us.. The immediate events and circumstances behind the freeze is still unclear.

On a different tack someone contacted me about a possible IT contract working for ING on payment processing :)

  1. UK Govt = Buy UK votes by bailing out UK depositors.
  2. IOM Govt = Buy future of their Finance Industry.
  3. 8000 accidental casualties ["Blue on blue"] are just one of those things that happen.

However, having seen the C4 coverage, and Ziggy's performance, I'm feeling moderately comfortable.

Thanks steveejeb,

Can I suggest that you e-mail your thoughts to Rosie M-W, the lady journalist in question.
Perhaps make the point, without being over emotial. You never know she may correct herself
and publish your / our opinion - she has the platform to do so/

The Stigma of Banking Offshore

I am looking for her address mikepapa . I will try and be less emotional in my response to her. After seeing the C4 news just now ,it is obvious that we still need to press our side as being honest, tax paying ordinary people with totally legitimate reasons for banking there. There is still the stigma of banking offshore that so many folk don't understand and we should not be tarred with the brush that John Snow finished the piece with. Despite all the great efforts of so many depositors on the forum here, it was obvious we still need to redouble our efforts to get the real story of real people out there and to keep hammering away. I certainly will, I have nothing else to lose.

Absolutely right. Unfortunately its one of those handy labels, like "celebrity", that means diddly-squat but has fully adjustable undertones.

I'm comforted by things like Ziggy emphasising "savers" instead of "investors", but you will never escape from Media/Estate Agent inexactitudes. That's why, as a former Whitehall warrior, I was sent on very long courses on the precise use of words!

I have heard/seen nothing on the forum about them. Is this another line of attack? I know they only want their money and pound of flesh and presumably being instructed by GB and his Darling .......... but .......??? any thoughts

I don't think E&Y "only want their money".
They are professionals and will follow the law, if they act illegally their firm will be liable.
Legally, as far as I know, KSFIOM's loan to KSFUK gives it the status of an unsecured creditor like all the others, therefore why E&Y can't just "give it all back".
I'm not saying it's fair or right, just that it's the way it is.
Gordon Brown's actions, however, well that's another matter....

Gordon Brown is the key to this, we need to be viscious, we need to be unrelenting and if need be we need to be a large force on the streets. There are 7000+ of us, im not suggesting we all rally in London but if need be we should aim to get at least a big chunk of us there

Allowing myself a little levity, as things are looking fractionally better ... "viscious"
Is that viscous, as in slimy?
Or vicious, as in morally evil?
Both could apply to Brown, but surely not to us? ;-)
