Here's something we have missed which might be helpful to the Action Group
  • many UK residents are saying (& some politicians are thinking) : "these exPats are not UK taxpayers so why should the UK taxpayer be involved in bailing them out?"

THIS IS NOT TRUE ! Many exPats like myself are paying UK taxes on our pensions (because we are ex civil servants / local government officers / NHS employees / police officers / military personnel, etc..). The fact that we are not living in the UK is irrelevant because legally WE ARE DOMICILED IN THE UK.

Ipso facto we contribute to the services enjoyed by UK citizens without ourselves benefiting from them.

There is also the inheritance tax factor.

UK non-residents who are domiciled in the UK - many of them I would think - could eventually be making a big contribution to the country's coffers through payment of inheritance tax.

Therefore, if the UK government bailed us out, it could expect to recover a considerable amount of the money in the long run.

I agree it would be a good idea to find out the stats for possible publicity.

I am long term expat and have been paying UK tax for years.
Plus Tax in country of residence - no double taxation treaty with HMG
