Site News will be posted here. This means news about changes and enhancements to the web-site itself, not news of other Group activities nor general news/information about the KSFIoM situation

Please refrain from comments that are not directly related to the topic. If you have ideas for new features which should be added to the site, or changes to be made etc, please post them in this thread.

Please read the Site Updates from time to time.

performance and search indexing...

Don't you believe the search indexing feature should be disabled from non-admin users...

I would be surprised if this does not impact all users when this is running? Ideally this could be scheduled at a time where there is less traffic ...

Thanks for your effort on this.

Maybe. One reasons I put it there original was that I did not have access on the old server to set up cron jobs. Its pretty heavy load, but the main issue we have is not CPU, but memory due to large number of concurrent connections. Maybe I will take it off and move it to a cron job.

Page update speed returned to acceptable level once I'd logged out.
I'd recommend everyone to do this when they're not posting (as per the banner - which would be better in a more strident colour).

You've all seen the message by now - sorry for shouting at you! :)

If you do spot any existing postings of personal info, please send me a link via the Admin Contact form so that I can edit the page.

One of two people have posted names, phone numbers, in one case I saw an entire physical address (with name and phone number.) People realise that we are a nice bunch but forget that the whole world can see this stuff - there are one or two nasty people out there who might pop round to see you if they think you've got money. Possible identity theft is another danger.

I feel that it has been slowing down in the last 2 days... It may be down to the increase in contributions and traffic... ng, any chance to get some caching in? I've got no expertise in Drupal but their website refers to caches module which may help here?
I know you don't have access to the server - so this may be tricky to put in.

Thanks again for all your help.

Yes, I've noticed too.

One thing you can do - if you're only reading info rather than posting - everything is much faster if you are not logged in. Anything you've seen about Drupal caching is about this - only "anonymous" pages can be cached, others have to be generated (although some elements may be cached.)

I will look at the performance issue when I get time. It's probably data size rather than traffic - originally the site was small and the entire content would have fit into memory on the server. That's probably not the case now, hence the slow down. The MySQL cache may be too small, I don't know if there's a PHP cache installed.

Any opinions on whether the current "newest first" display order is optimal. Reading, I'm getting confused about order of postings. Would "oldest first" be preferred? I can't remember where to change it but I imagine I can find it.

You may have already noticed the Recent posts menu item (on the left). If not, give it a try. These are "topics" not individual comments.

From "my account" (menu on left) you will now see a tab titled "track" where you can see a list of all discussions you've personally contributed to. Note these are the "topics", not the individual comments or sub-topics that get started as comments.

I've told Google about this site, but it will probably be some time before they index it, and quite possibly weeks before it shows up in typical searches, if ever.

So, if you are active on other systems that have relevant discussions, I suggest you post a link to this site so that people can find it. I can't actually remember how I found it, but I know it was a link from another site.

Thanks for comments, good points. I've changed the site title. Google actually doesn't care too much about meta data (keywords and such) but does take a lot of notice of content and urls. We've got lots of content, so that's giving Google something to bite on and it does seem to be working.

Search: kaupthing isle of man
We're #11 (top of page 2)

Search: kaupthing iom
We're at #9

Search: ksf iom
We're #1

I haven't tried any other search engines.

One thing that won't help, is there is no mention of Kaupthing or Isle of Man in the title of the site that appears in the header bar - only KSF and IOM. Suggest changing it to "Kaupthing Isle of Man Depositors Action Group". The web address can stay exactly the same (we cannot change it at this stage). Also there's no keywords or other info in the site metadata. Both of these make a HUGE difference as to being found in search engines.

I did note a couple thought Kaupthing Edge was just UK mainland accounts.

I got to this site, by searching google with ksf iom, it was on the top of the result. Possibly need to add a few tags so other search patterns would result in this site showing up.

The original topics are becoming huge. Unfortunately there's no way to sub-divided them so rather than allow them to grow ad infinitum, please consider starting a new topic (thread) rather than posting as a comment to one of the existing threads.

There are advantages in the "one big thread" approach, I know, especially if you want to read absolutely everything. So, we need to find the right balance. So before posting anything please think.

To start a new topic you can use Create content/forum topic (menu on the left) or Forum (also menu on the left) and "drill-down" to where it should go. The structure of forums divisions and sub-divisions is still evolving, please post suggestions here.

Again, please think twice before posting a comment into one of the existing long, long threads.

Just a reminder, please check this page on a regular basic as things are changing fast. You can get to it from "Site News" on the top menu.

Hope you like the new colours - I've spent probably 30 hours over three days staring at the old site colours, I needed a change :)

Registration problems, hopefully fixed

I made a change which should hopefully prevent the registration confirmation email from being blocked by anti-spam systems.

If you have previously tried to register but have not received the confirmation email is to use the Request new password link shown on the login form - that will send another email with a link that should allow you to log in.

If anyone is still having problems registering, send me a message using the Admin Contact menu item. Let me know the username you've registered and a password you would like to use, and I'll set it up manually. Later you should log in and change your password to something else for security reasons.

The site has moved to a different server, and that will hopefully reduce the number of failed registration emails (the registration confirmation email not arriving.) Please try the "password reminder" feature. If all else fails, message me using the Admin Contact option. I think I have now worked through the backlog. In one or two cases, the problem was that an invalid email address had been entered.

At the moment I'm still logged in [I think] using Mat's email. I'm disinclined to log out unless I find I can't get back in again, but I also dislike having an open channel to the web all the time.

Can I try to register as a new user now, using gomann instead of "go mann"?

This may be of help to anyone having problems registering here.

I couldn't get registered to this site despite several attempts. The password just wasn't getting back to me. It wasn't in my Spam folder or anywhere else I could see. So eventually I tried registering through my other email account, with gmail. The password came back instantly.

The search facility is now fully functional (it may or may not have been working before.)

The search works on an index of content which has to be rebuilt from time to time. Any content that was added since the last time the index was updated will not be included. To make sure that the index is completely up to date, you can use Update search index on the menu. Note, it may take a while before the process completes, and while it is running you won't see anything new on the screen.
