Restricting site to depositors.

Has the time not come, whether legal opinion or representation is sought or not, to restrict access to bona fide depositors ?

Whenever I've looked at the site in recent days there have been more guests than "users" (perhaps this has contributed to technical problems ?) online.

I appreciate we are all, hopefully, actively writing to MPs etc and doubtless providing a link to the site, but surely there should be at least a 'level' beyond which only those affected can pass ?

I'm not a technical person, but there seems to considerable expertise 'aboard' (including former K IOM employee / savers too).

Is it not possible to move on from "users" to "members" (perhaps by paying say £25, except for 'exceptional' hardship cases {which would go straight to helping eg Expat and others incurring significant expenditure} and some sort of means of confidentialy and securely showing that we indeed have Kaupthing a/cs .

Just a well intentioned but non-expert thought but with increasing awareness, and more visitors to the site, surely it's essential that any sinister elements are not assisted or allowed to hinder our progress ?

Restrict areas of the site, rather than the whole site, will be the way forward I think - we can have "invite only" areas, or where you have to request membership from existing moderators.

I honestly don't think this is the way forward. We want as many people hearing about the plight as possible, and restricting the access goes directly against this.

Adding a mandatory fee will also make some people think that we are profiteering, and that would be a catastrophe for our cause.

I say keep as we are...

Now that individual topics are coming out, not just everything in the original main topics...

Any topic can be placed on the front page. I am about to delegate that control to an elite group :) known as The Editors (this is a change from the original role name of Moderator user).

Right now they are: MatWalker, occams razor, sleeplessnight, and Monkeyface3604

I didn't elect the above group - that was done before my time. I am sure they are all capable and trustworthy people.

So, very shortly, they will have the ability to move things on to the front page, create polls, leap over tall buildings with a single bound, and so on. Let me know what else is needed.

Thumbs Up for Editors Group !

This is a great idea ! To date this has been a valuable Forum enabling those caught up in this horrendous nightmare to give expression to their shock, fear, frustration, anger & despair.
I feel sure many have found some comfort in knowing they are not alone, and indeed some are worse off than ourselves. Hopefully it has saved some from giving up on life itself.

Every contribution has been valuable but now the time has come 'to sort out the wheat from the chaff', to focus on, & highlight, the core issues that need to be pursued in order to get depositors' money restored to them.
Thus I feel that the editors will fulfil a valuable role in creating a forum 'front page' -- 'headlining' , prioritising & synthesising the core issues that have emerged & those that continue to emerge.

The 'British bulldog' is still alive !

I don't think people would want a summary for the whole site? Theres a lot of activity - Groups is they way forward. Email notification within Groups is now active, and the is a "Mailing List" Group - If somebody can write a daily summary, it can go to the mailing list.

On a related topic, I've mentioned already (nobody replied) that maybe it would be easier to understand having postings displayed in chronological order, i.e. oldest first. I don't want to make that change without getting some input, as it may cause all kinds of confusion for people who were used to the "newest first" view. I don't think I can easily make it configurable at a user level.

I've really struggled with the present system. I think most fora work on a "newest last" basis and I'd certainly welcome a change to that.

I think it would make it harder, you might have to scroll to the end of a 7 page series of comments to see the new ones. Just my opinion. But I agree something needs to be done to organise things better (no criticism), though at this stage with so many existing posts and topics, it's tough.
The problem is we originally used a single forum topic as a huge long discussion, then we created more topics, then new forums, and we've ended up with an unholy mix.
My only (somewhat radical) suggestion, would be to move all "forum topics" (except site functionality), into one single "forum", with sorting by "last reply" as default. That way all active topics stay at the top, or move to the top if recently replied to, and other die. Not sure if it would freak people out though.

Is it not possible to adopt formats of other forums, where they have a general area, which then contains a list of topics and you click on the topic to read the posts? I think this is a much better system, and certainly much easier to navigate...

Potentially we could face a situation here where good posts go un noticed due to it being difficult to find.

The kind of format I am suggesting is like this website:
http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/

I know this may be difficult to achieve, and therefore may not be possible in the required time frame, but if something could be done, I believe it will help everyone greatly...

Sorry, just to clarify, on further looking around, I think it is the ability to reply to someone's specific post in a topic that is causing the confusion. It is leading to many different sub topics forming, and making it confusing!

Please don't see this as negative criticism, it is meant to be entirely constructive. The work you guys have done, and in the space of time in which you have achieved it is incredible. Thank you so much!

Ng, sorry to be a pain but you don't include an option for my current time zone. Kandahar is GMT+4.30, don't ask me why the half hour.

You have an option for +3.30, +5.30 and even +5.45 but nothing for me. I realise that it probably comes as a tool provide by the web site providers so maybe in your copious spare time you could ask them to correct this.

Issues

  • I think I've proven that the problems is the machine we are running on.
  • I'm reluctant to reboot the machine as I may lose ability to log back in and restart everything.
  • Greg, who set up the account is not contactable by email (probably asleep, in Australia)
  • I've found out who the hosting company is, also in Australia so doubt I'll get a response (but haven't tried)

Proposal:

I will make a mirror copy of the entire site on my server. Its another VPS, located in the USA , and I've been using it few a year or so so know its generally reliable. This is going to take me a few hours, assuming all goes well, maybe just an hour if it goes incredibly smoothly. In the meantime maybe Greg will appear. Once the mirror copy is up and running we can decide whether to use it or not. The only real problem is that I will have to "snapshot" the site... I can probably get everything copied across, but there will be some downtime, and possibly loss of a few postings from the final half hour after I take the snapshot.

Only alternative to mirroring and moving is to wait for Greg or maybe the hosting company to fix it, but I don't know if theyll talk to me, its not my account.

Am I over-reacting? Can we carry on working as we are even though its incredibly slow?

Well, I'm going to get started with this. Comments appreciated. Use Admin Contact to email me, I may not be here checking on the site.

Im trying to fix (actually) cancelled my afternoons work, so now I'm another 100 quid worse off :(

Something WEIRD is going on. I cannot see any reason for this.. cpu use it really not high, load average around 0.20, memory ok, no swap space being used.

Maybe a server reboot would fix.. Ive already restart Apache and MySQL.

Any more IT people here??? This doesnt make sense to me. What am I missing?

The server is a virtual machine.. I wondering the the physical machine is overloaded. But its not my account so I don't know who to contact.

Only solution I think of is to move everything to another server (not as complex as it sounds but still quite a lot of work) and see what happens... that will prove whether this machine is the problem. or not.

The problems seems to be Apache?

Done locally from there server via a console login:
time wget http://www.ksfiomdepositors.com/cms/INSTALL.txt
real 0m23.675s

Meanwhile: load average: 0.13, 0.21, 0.14

Nearly 24 seconds to locally get a small (14k) text file. Something is screwed up.Restarting Apache (yet again) makes no difference.

http://www.ksfiomdepositors.com/cms/INSTALL.txt -- a plain text file, also totally lethargic, so the problem is NOT MySQL or PHP, its at the Apache level (or higher).

I've restarted Apache already. WTF is going on? Must be the physical machine or hosting company (network problem maybe)
