malc - I was chasing up other members by email before that trying to find out the status of the petition - the problem was nobody could tell me where we were at. The site design was mostly done last night, and only partly by me.

Please see my next posting also.

Dear Website people - you have done/are doing a great job. You are obviously incurring some costs keeping this operation running. Do you need contirbutions from those in the group who can afford to help you? Please let us know - do not suffer in silence!

Thanks for the offer FalconVest. The direct financial outlay of operating the server is small - only a little over 20 USD per month, probably needs to double in order to have the kind of server we ought to have, but we can skimp. The real cost is in the time spent, and this is beginning to become a very significant issue, both for myself and other members of the site administration team. Of course we are not alone in that, there are other many other people here providing for free services that they otherwise charge for, in the interest of the common good.

Most of of the "financial help" sites are funded, in part or in whole, through advertising. I really don't think that's a viable option for us at the moment, and I'm not sure it ever will ever be. Sooner or later we are going to have to start some kind of donations account, otherwise we'll reach a point where we're unable to provide much at all by the way of service, and I reel reluctant to start off down that road as that wasn't why I offered help in the first place.

I think we need to see what happens over the next weeks and then go from there. In the meantime, assistance from any suitably experienced volunteers would reduce my workload.

... as you've probably noticed.

  • They are collapsible (click the title)
  • Order can be changed, but only globally for everybody - request changes if you want.
  • I can make it possible for individual users to choose to have a block not displayed at all, but I think the collapsible function is sufficient.

The one which is not obvious - Group members are now displayed, you have to be "in" a group area.

My first contact with you all, our IFA transferred to cash earlier in the year but inside 3 bonds have £250K in KSF IOM, WHY you may ask? Zurich confirmed today their bond is deemed a Corporate Investment even though we are individuals (pensioners), because they are held in the name of Zurich International Life! The KSF (IOM) element is not currently covered by the IoM or any other compensation scheme. The others are CM and ScotEq who have not even contacted me but the result will be the same I'm sure.
Waiting and hoping and trying to remain focussed.

It's now possible to change your own user name, via the My account page (menu on left.)

This is because so many people are registering with "real" names, then realising that may not be a good idea. I'll add a warning to the registration process itself.

Please do not change your username without good cause, as it may lead to confusion regarding who authored earlier postings.

Server crash today :( - may be hacking related

  • ng

  • Thu, 16/10/2008 - 11:09

The server died again, around 10:45 UK time it would seem, and was down for about 1:40, unfortunately I wasn't around to notice.

I suspect that one factor, possibly a major factor is the hacking attempts we are being hit with. These are programs or bots, often trojans run by unsuspecting users - they repeatedly try to gain access, e.g. to post a spam message or register an account (to later post spam). Because they produce large numbers of requests in a short time they can create a very significant server load.

So, conclusion, we probably do need to do the server upgrade after all. One of our members, Stef, has more experience than me with Apache Linux installations, has volunteered to tak a look at the current configuration to see if an improved configuration is possible. I suspect an upgrade is the sensible route though.

We believe we proved during extensive testing yesterday that a server upgrade is unlikely to solve the problems we've been having - it would allow the site to be faster, and allow for future capacity. It might solve the problem too, but we haven't identified what the problem is.

If the instability continues, we will need to move to a a dedicated server, by which I mean dedicated to running only this website. The reasons is, the current server is my server, it contains data for other clients and my personal data - so I cannot give anybody else low-level access to it - I am the only person who can restart it after a crash - this is a big issues if I'm out or asleep at the time! If we move to another server, then multiple admins can be appointed, though they still need to be highly trusted individuals.

Ng, is it possible to a sign up to the petition button onto the site.

We could do with something on the home page that routes the sign up via the site rather than the external email I setup as a stop gap.

If its permanently visible then everyone coming to the site could sign up. At the moment I keep putting up posts to remind people where to go and how to sign up as they get lost (my fault as I'm not really familiar with forums).

We really need everyone to sign up to make the petition really effective.

Maybe we could hack into the K S F website and under the press release tell them where we all are.

I don't think I can do it from standard Drupal features/modules, which means I'd have to actually pogram it myself. No big deal, that's what I do, just non-trivial. I'll take a quick look to see if there's something off-the-shelf.

Captcha (graphic code) issues

As you've noticed, I've increased the obscurity of the captcha code. This is because the site is getting targetted by hacker-scripts, probably with the ultimate goal of posting spam. Sorry, if the code is causing difficulty to some of you (as it evidently is, judging by the site logs.)

I'm going to change the captcha system to something else more secure whilst easy to use for real people.

Meanwhile, I've made some config changes aimed at making the site stable with the current server - it seems to be working, but may result in a slow-down. Maybe I should mention, I'm a software designer by professional - server administration is a specific role and while I understand the issues I don't pretend to be an expert in that.

By posting this I am adding to the problem, but I'm sure some of the techinical hitches the site is experiencing is from users putting in their 2 bits worth every time the site is slow or goes down, and commenting when its back up. Can we all exercise some patience when it is slow and refrain from posting anything that is not relevant to our financial problem . Having to wade through pages of posts about the technical aspects of keeping the site up only add to the frustration.
I would just like to give a hearfelt thanks those who are spending hours and hours operating the site, lets keep its use in our best interests, which is getting our money back.
PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS POST.

After several hours downtime. This is hapening because we are using a small "virtual" server and it's running out of memory and crashing. This time I wasn't around to reboot it. It can be upgraded easily and we've had at least one offer of funding.

I'll aim to have this resolved by the end of tomorrow.

Looks like the tweaking I yesterday has worked. The server is still busy, but hasn't crashed (fingers-crossed) crashed. So, a server upgrade is still on the cards, but the immediate urgency has gone, unless our number of users increases suddenly, but that seems unlikely... numbers are creeping up slowly though.

Please see: http://www.vpsland.com/xlseries.html
We are on XL-192, I suggest going straight to XL-512, should allow a margin for error and future expansion. Can always be downgraded again in the event that its overkill.

For people who are suggesting other hosting companies, I'm happy with this company. There are numerous reasons why a VPS is better than a (cheaper) "shared hosting" plan, which I don't have time to go into right now.

I think ng is absolutely right about access: we need as many people as possible to know about our predicament, and we want this site to be a resource for journalists etc. But if we use this site to formulate our strategy we are going to need to restrict access to parts of it because we might need to put some personal info on it in order to work together.......we are putting lots of information up here. So far no personal information has gone on the site, but lets not make ourselves any more vulnerable that we already are
