Site News will be posted here. This means news about changes and enhancements to the web-site itself, not news of other Group activities nor general news/information about the KSFIoM situation

Please refrain from comments that are not directly related to the topic. If you have ideas for new features which should be added to the site, or changes to be made etc, please post them in this thread.

Please read the Site Updates from time to time.

Improvements to public site

I took a break over the Christmas period (which here in Spain runs until Jan-7) and have only been checking the site to make sure everything was working. But today a number of enhancements have been implemented, the public site has undergone a few improvements:

  • Subscriptions are now working (so you can be automatically updated when new or updated material is posted.)

  • The site has a new feature in the sidebar-based menu which hopefully makes it quicker to reach key information.

  • There is a new feature to display unread content in the sidebar - "latest" tab in the top menu item.

The calendar display (public www site) is now correct - previously events that were exactly on the hour were shown in the wrong "slot" on day/week calendar display (the the actual time shown in the text was displayed correctly.) This turned out to be a bug in the underlying PHP code and not a time-zone configuration problem as I had suspected.

Note for anyone entering new events (restricted to only a few members) the input time is now set for GMT, that means if you are entering an event scheduled using UK time you no longer need to correct for your own local time-zone.

Many changes have been made, just not posted here. A lot of time has gone in helping with the set up of the new www site - sleeplessnight and teapot have been working very hard on that and several other volunteers are helping too.

The web-site split a while back caused all kinds of issues, which are gradually being dealt with. A minor thing that I fixed this morning was the site icon (the unhappy face) which should appear again now in your browser address bar and on tabs, making it much easier to see which tabs you have open to pages on our sites. These features are browser-dependent, but generally true.

The next step is to fix Groups ... since the split, Group functionality has been partially broken (specifically, people see Group postings which they should not see unless they're in the Group) This is related to adding access-control to Forums, basically the Forum-level access control is conflicting with (overriding) the Group-level access control.

I also need to set things up so that Group Managers have more power within their Groups, e.g. to create Polls.

There are numerous small glitches around still - the most annoying one perhaps that links to comments don't always work (not taking you to the correct comment.) One of my projects is to introduce a task-tracking system, so that issues can be logged and not forgotten about. Not sure at the moment if that will be done here or on an external system, the advantages of the latter being that it can be far more powerful and used as a project management tool. With a task-tracking system in place, we have better possibilities for team-working on web-site issues, and the same can probably be extended to other DAG projects.

I am eternally grateful for this site but really would like to get up to it more easily.
I am at present condemned to wandering around Europe having to use soem very uncertain dial up systems - and keyboards. Please why can´t I have a simple pass word that I can remember and replicate from memory every time I ant to getto the site?

Um, you can?

Log in to your account. In the left-hand sidebar you'll see a 'banna' user block with the likes of 'Log Out', 'My Account', etc.

Go to 'My Account', then click the 'Edit' menu item.

Put your own password in (twice), then scroll down and click the 'Save' button.

All done. You should now be able to log in with your own easy-to-remember password.

I still believe it is important to lobby MP's whatever their negative reponse may be !! SO I still send off versions of the sample letters, depending on topic, that have been posted on the NEW site - they really help my thought process.

ONE snag now is obtaining the email addresses of MPs - YES you can use http://www.parliament.uk/directories/hciolists/alms.cfm - but it is time consuming and awkward -

It was much easier with Divers posting on this site http://chat.ksfiomdepositors.org/action-or-task/contact-mps-4th-nov which has links to each Political party listing the Mps and their e.amil address - it made the process simple and quick. A great tool.

Unfortunately since the change over to the new site these links don't work - they say either address not valid or page not found.

Would there be any chance of mending the broken link??
Thanks a bunch IT people.

I did post this last night (when I was half asleep in the wrong place - sorry)

I think we need a Depositors only section on the website where we can hold our discussions. Any stakeholder is surely monitoring closely our discussions and can basically read in our minds, which puts us at a strategic disadvantage. The problem with having an open forum is also that there may be postings by non depositor parties who have a different or opposite agenda to ours.

Depositors could be originally identified by inputting some code word which can be found on Kaupthing IOM statements, say.

Completely agree with Iwantmymoneyback.

We don't get to listen in to Simpson and chums, or any other of those who stand to gain from points and discussions on here.

It's now lunacy to continue this "straight bat" approach.

If (?) no savers list has been obtained from 'friendly' ksfiom staff, then the best alternative is to charge a fee.

Two birds with one stone - fighting funds and (at least) a deterrent for those who shouldn't be 'watching'.

may be a good idea in itself - but it would not prevent any "outsider" from joining if they really wanted to!

We do need to have a central fund though for basic running costs - the website being the most pressing.

This really needs to be sorted very soon. I know ng is feeling the pinch working upaid on this for the last 6 weeks. many people have offered direct donations but I feel sure the time has come for a proper fund properly administered.

What are the options? Brainstorm pls?

Agree completely, and this has been discussed. Your "code-word" idea is a good one, but i don't think it's practical - personally, for example, I have no documentation from the bank (which worries me) and I imagine I'm not the only one.

We decided that the best we can realistically do is to simply ask people if they are depositors or not. But even then, there are "friendly" parties who are not depositors and there may be "unfriendly" parties who are, or at least claim to be, depositors. So, I don't think there is a simple solution. I am very willing to set up new Groups for anyone who wants them - they can be made "by invitation only" and thus existing members can decide whether to trust new members or not, and so allow admission or not.

I would suggest that existing Groups look at their members and check out the "track records" of individuals. If you have concerns about any members, let me know. Lack of postings and/or a recent join-date may be negative indicators.

But lets also look on the positive side - let's suppose for example that the UK Government have people monitoring this site - highly probable. Regardless of who might be "watching" us, we can feed them wrong information, or misleading information, or just real information - and how will they know the difference? They may think they're collectively smarter then we are, but I doubt there would be any real basis in such an arrogant assumption.

That is what the Landsbanki Guernsey Depositors Group used to give access to the members only section of the website. As far as Kaupthing depositors are concerned, we should now have all received a statement as of 30 September together with a covering letter (mine is dated 6 November). If you have not received yours, you should do so shortly. Every depositor, without exception, has/ will receive such a letter.

It has been pointed out previously that the 30 Sep statements only went out to accounts that would normally have received a statement on that date. Term accounts, bonds, instant access accounts that don't receive regular statements will not receive one this time either. Some time in the future (next month?) everyone should receive a statement as at 8 October.

I actually had a call from Kaupthing IoM yesterday in response to my email asking about statements. She told me that they had only been sent to people who would normally receive statements, and not to anyone with online accounts or invested via a Bond. However, she did also say that they were hoping to send out statements to everyone in December, just so that we have a piece of paper 'showing what you have with the Bank' (!!) or 'had' as I corrected her!

I am not a direct depositor, I have a Bond through Royal Skandia, so I do not receive bank statement.

If a Code Word for give access is a possibility, please remember those that do not have a bank statement.

In our case we could use the identification number of our Bond.

We have tried to ensure that 'members' have updated their status, some are obviously depositors but have yet to 'declare' their status as such, so that we know as a group, by checking someones 'profile' their status. So would all depositors action this task. http://chat.ksfiomdepositors.org/blog-entry/all-registered-members-your-...

Site restored from backup of 2008-11-16 02:25 GMT

Due to a failed bulk database update, it was necessary to restore from backup. Any posts made between approximately 02:25 and 04:10 GMT on 16-Nov will have been lost - not much from my calculations, but a handful of postings will have been affected. I could recover them, but the work involved would be many hours as the backup and current database would have to be merged which is complex to say the least, and the site would have to be kept off-line during that time, which I don't think is the best solution. So, they are gone, sorry.

Now I have to try to figure out what went wrong and make sure it doesn't happen again :(

Now that the server is finally sorted, new features should be coming along pretty quickly. Here's a list so far:

  • Subscriptions - moved to block in left side-bar (much tidier and easier to use IMO).
  • Added Popular content display (right side-bar), hopefully self-explanatory.
  • Email addresses, if typed into postings, are now hidden so that they are unlikely to be picked up by harvesters (programs used by spammers to collect email addresses from web sites.) Basically this means you can type any email address directly as my name(?)example [dot] com.
  • Some other minor changes.

If you'd like specific features, please ask. Everything is possible :)

We're aware that the site is occasionally very slow, often taking many seconds or even a minute to display a page. This is not due to server overloading, but some technical issue which we are working to track down. Our provider www.xtrahost.co.uk is proving very professional and helpful in working with us to resolve this issue. In short though, it shouldn't be happening yet it is - it's proving very difficult to isolate the cause.

Some of you may had had difficulty accessing the site this morning (Sat 25/10), but only if you were using one of the old addresses. To clarify:

  1. www.ksfiomdepositors.org is now the real address (and was working fine this morning.)

  2. www.ksfiomdepositors.netgenius.co.uk should no longer be used. However, it's shown on many other sites, Google etc. It is set to route automatically route to (1), but this morning there was a problem with that mechanism. The routing has now been changed to work in a more robust way and no further problems of this nature are anticipated.

  3. www.ksfiomdepositors.com should no longer be used. It will route to (2) above, and therefore to (1), so shared the same problem this morning. A few external sites still show links from this address.

In summary, it's best to always access the site at www.ksfiomdepositors.org though the "old" addresses will usually work.

Rate of new people joining running at around 30 per day. I saw 300+ "guests" on-line last night. ("guests" are simply people browsing the site but not logged-in.)

New server is up and running and we are testing it with a backup copy of the site before moving over. It has much higher capacity than currently, should allow the site to be much quicker generally, and cater for the occasionally peak loads we get when news items come out which drives large numbers of people to the site in a short time space.

The server was down yesterday for around 3 and a half hours. The first three hours due to a problem at our hosting provider, not our server as such. The final half hour was because I had popped out the shops - this is the real world, people :) Got back to find the original problem fixed, a few tweaks and we were back up. Thanks again to stef for his invaluable help.

Still waiting for the hosting company to process the upgrade order, seems they don't understand the word urgent. More news soon.

Search facilities are limited at the moment, but nonetheless far more than we had before.

The work now is to find existing postings - can be done by searching for http: - and add them to the database. If you do any, make sure to comment on the original posting to say that it's been added. So... many hands make light work.

Please add ALL new News links to the database rather than posting into the forums.

To add to the news database, use the Create new News item link (top of right side-bar). To browse the database, use In the News (top right of page).

Right, I'm knackered. Enjoy!

This feature should help people keep track of changes to important threads - it allows the system to send you email automatically when some topic has been updated (e.g. a new comment added.)

  • You can subscribe" to various things (topics, authors, polls, etc.)
  • You will receive notification by email when an update is made
  • You can control your subscription settings from "my account"

This feature is under test. If it causes problems (e.g. too many emails being sent and so overloading the server) it may need to be disabled again.

I have noticed that, due to the way options are displayed, the "add new comment" link is less obvious than before. Will be able to solve that in the longer term, but right now I have too many projects.

There is not enough mentioned in the media about Kaupthing and in particular about it's branch in Isle of man. It appears that the media are trying not to exacerbate the anxiety in financial word by mentioning less about the problem.

I understand there are about 10,000 account holders and 850 million pounds at stake, which means with the IOM scheme with 37 registered banks on the island it would take 45 years for us to get our money back!

I am seriously concerned with the Isle of man problem and would like to do more about it than sit here and wait. I have so far signed a petition, is there anything else we can do?

My savings was deposited with this bank I am angry because I did not want to risk this money and someone else did.

I notice that when I am online that there is always a lot of guests online as well. At the moment it stares that there are 15 users and 17 guests. Obviously some guests are hopefully people working for the the media getting information hopefully to help our cause. The remainder though are probably investors with KSM (IOM). It would be great if these guests would take the time to register, it is very easy and will help the cause.

I've spent the past three hours or more trying to track down the reason for our server stability problem. Thanks for a huge amount of help from stef, who really knows his stuff in the Linux/Apache arena - we've run a lot of tests which unfortunately all indicate that nothing is wrong.

This is now a priority - the reason being.. every server crash carries a small risk of data loss. The system is backed up, but "only" every six hours.. rolling back six hours would be fairly disastrous I think.

We are hoping that today's outage was maybe a one-off - it didn't share the same symptoms as previous crashes during the week. We believed yesterday that the issue had already been resolved (again, thanks to stef who produced the necessary reconfiguration information.) This is the worst type of problem to fix - it goes away as soon as you start to look for it. So, we have a few more things to try, basically trying to eliminate possible causes - one more crash means we will switch to another host (not a decision to be taken lightly.)

The server passed perfectly, which would be good, but in this case unhelpful..
