Site News will be posted here. This means news about changes and enhancements to the web-site itself, not news of other Group activities nor general news/information about the KSFIoM situation

Please refrain from comments that are not directly related to the topic. If you have ideas for new features which should be added to the site, or changes to be made etc, please post them in this thread.

Please read the Site Updates from time to time.

Can't edit "group topic"

It's deliberately disabled - the idea is to ensure that a post cannot be edited in such a way as to be "out of sync" with comments that may have been made. A stupid example: a post that says "2+2 = 4, do you agree?" followed by lots of comments in agreement, then the post is edited to say "2+2 = 5". So, the idea is to have a sort of "audit trail" of post and resulting comments. Yes, I know this may be inconvenient, but that is the reasoning behind the restriction.

You can edit blog posts and (group managers) a group home page because neither of these post types allow comments (by default.)

Hope this makes sense.

Various updates to the CMS installed. Most will not present any visible changes, but a Notifications update fixes a number of bugs in that notifications / subscriptions feature.

The Recent Posts / Read All view has been improved. Previously it sorted by date based on last comment date, but ignored an updated post (e.g. in the case of an updated blog entry) - It now takes into account both comment date and updated date. Additionally, it may be sorted by that date, comment count or author in ascending or descending order.

I've been unable to connect to the site for a couple of says due to what seems to be some kind of routing problem between here and London. Possibly, other people in some parts of Spain may have been affected too. The problem is still not fixed, but a work-around in place.

Ok, I finally got to the bottom of why some people were complaining about "deleted" comments. In fact, they were not deleted (and I have previously asserted that they were not deleted) however they were being made invisible to "normal" members and only visible to me - this is why I was not aware there was an issue. This appears to be a bug in the "Flag as offensive" module, or if not a bug then a design limitation. For now, it has been removed, and I will look for a more flexible/reliable replacement.

In the meantime, this does not mean that anything goes - please read my recent post "freedom of speech" post. In general, if you post items that a significant number of people object to, those posts may be edited or removed. Furthermore, the authors of such posts may be ejected from groups, including (but not limited to) the All members group.

I would suggest that everyone considers including the optional information in their profile - accessible via the My account link, as that will help others to better understand your motives.

The view of "all" content, shown on the top-right menu as Read: All now allows you to search by author, both the author of the original post and comments.

  • Author - whoever posted the original. This field will only accept a valid user-name, but provides a lookup facility (type for first few characters) to find valid user names.
  • Comment by - whoever has commented. This needs to be a valid user name, but does not provide a lookup facility (there are technical reasons for this that I won't go into.)

A separate facility to search for all comments made by a particular person may be feasible and I am investigating providing that facility.

Polls, creation and editing

I have removed the ability for people to edit an existing poll (it was only available to the creator of the poll, and even then not in all cases.) The issue is that editing a poll results in vote counts being reset to zero - this makes total sense, since editing a poll (potentially changing the question and choices) could obviously invalidate existing votes.

So, anyone creating polls - please do some thinking to make sure you've got the correct set of options thought out before actually creating the poll.

Site inaccessibility Sat-31-Jan approx 21:30 to 23:30 GMT

  • Sun, 01/02/2009 - 00:02

The site was inaccessible but not due to a fault at our end - it was a DNS issue, a result of some kind of failure of at or en route to enom.com who provide our DNS service. They are a major player - most likely hundreds of thousands of other web-sites would have been inaccessible for the same reasons during the same period.

DNS is a bit like a telephone directory, when you access any site on the net, here, Google, Microsoft, etc, the DNS directory is used to look-up the IP address of the site - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_Name_System

As a result of a request, I have created a new content type called Journal. If you create a Journal post, all comments to it will appear in chronological order, and "flat" in the sense that replies to earlier comments will appear at the end. Yes, I know this might be confusing for those who are used to the current forum topic display, but there are those that regards the latter as way too confusing in itself.

I've changed the minimum interval that "notifications" were sent out .. previously it was only every three hours, but now every 15 minutes, so you may be receiving relatively fewer messages at more frequent intervals than before.

In any case, you can set the interval yourself (I have changed only the minimum interval) - please read this for more information.

The server was down again today starting from around 15:15 UK time. It was back up about an hour later, but problems persisted so taken down again to run a few tests. Now back up (since about 17:00) and currently seems ok. However, something seems to be amiss - these problems are new - everything had been fine for a long, so we need to investigate further.

The search is back: http://chat.ksfiomdepositors.org/search for testing. This will search all visible site content - forums, blogs, group discussions, etc. and their comments - for the words you specify. Visible content in this case means publicly accessible content and all content in forums and groups of which you are a member.

The process is relatively costly in terms of server processing - too many users searching will result in the site grinding to a halt. For a simple title search (doesn't load the server anywhere near as much) use http://chat.ksfiomdepositors.org/tracker

The public site provides a Google search, but that would be of little use here because much of the content is for "members only" and so invisible to Google.

Both sites were down from 17:20 UK time on 24-Jan. The forum site was restored at around 21:05, and the main www site later at around 22:30 as it required further action to get it working again.

The cause was some kind of low-level systems problem which caused the server (VPS) to crash. The nature of the problem was such that it could not be resolved without involving the hosting company's technical team - they responded promptly and addressed the problem with very little delay. So, thanks to xtrahost.co.uk for that.

Also great thanks to stef for his voluntary help.

A simple search, but hopefully useful - you can limit results by type (e.g. only News items or only Blog entries) and by a simple text search on the title of the post. The latter searches for posts with a title congaing all words that you specify, occurring in any order.

It is possible for me to add text search of the main text of the post, but searching within comment text is difficult, due to the way the information is structured internally in the system. The CMS does provide a more extensive search facility, allowing text search across the whole site (comments included.) We are not using it because its fairly expensive in terms of server performance, but I will aim to run some tests to see how great the impact might be and whether acceptable or not.

There are lots of ideas being bounced around, a poll provides the easiest and fastest way for measuring level of support and/or getting opinions.

Two types:

Poll

Use the Create Poll link. This is the standard poll you have seen used on the site. You will need to ask a question and provide two or more specific answers, perhaps with "none of the above" as an additional response.

Simple poll

Use the Create Simple Poll link. This allows you to measure level of agreement/support for a proposal or idea on a one to five scale, the result is displayed as a simple "five star" chart.

In both cases, please create the poll inside the relevant group, or use the all members group if the poll needs a response from all members. You will see the Create... links in the group menu, near top-right.

I've modified the Simple Poll scale so that the 1 to 5 range represents strong disagreement to strong agreement. You could regard it to be effectively a -2 to +2 scale of level of agreement. Probably more versatile this way.

Have just found (and fixed) the fact that people not-logged in did not have access to files attached, typically PDF files. This was related to the fact that we originally planned for most of the information to be "members only" and then later decided to make everything public - but the attached files hadn't got made public until now.

Separate issue: Apparently the top drop-down menu doesn't work properly with Internet Explorer - I still need to investigate.

Already written this once and it seems to have disappeared. Weird...

The new site graphical design, layout and colours were done by a professional designer - his link is at the bottom of the page. The photos are from an image library. Funding was provided by nixi, but I believe the designer gave the DAG a very good deal, so thanks to both of them for their contributions. Nixi also provided the text for the new front-page ("Imagine that you put all your life savings into a bank...").

We've spent most of today implementing the new design, everything seems to be working now but there may be a few issues to resolve. There are more photos and stories to be added to the front page (in addition to the two currently shown) and nixi is handling that but it may take a few days as I believe he's away on business at the moment.
