Likewise I'm hoping it won't take that long! Working out my own "subscription expiry date" isn't easy, but I've just done a quick calculation and it came out at 417 years, which should be enough time :)

Recent server upgrade has had a marked effect

server load

The above graph shows how server loading has dropped dramatically since the server upgrade last week. A load average of 1.00 (indicated by the horizontal red line) represents a situation where the server is 100% utilised. Higher than 1.00 means that the server is overloaded (things would be running slowly).

The individual lines on the graph represent the average load over periods of 1, 5 and 15 minutes - black, red and green respectively. So, it's clear that until the upgrade, the server was overloaded for much of the time, but now has spare capacity for most of the time.

For now, I think it's up to you to indicate until when you have paid; there is not yet a check on this.
Click on your name, then edit/contributions - then fill in yourself the expiry date in the appropriate place. Then I think it should appear on your posts.

Members' account profile page now includes a check-box to request free access. Please note that the offer is open only to bona fide depositors and those helping close family members who are bona fide depositors. If ticked, the member summary which is displayed on forum posts and comments will show: Expires: n/a (free).

The check-box is under the contributions section of your account profile. Note, that link won't work if you're reading this via email notification, instead go to your account then select, Edit and then Contributions.

  • Sat, 11/07/2009 - 19:11

In forum posts and comments, where member name and join date were previously shown (on the left of the post) additional information is now included. Example:

Expires: 31/05/09
Status: a depositor

The first item is the date of site subscription expiry and will be 31/05/09 for anyone who has never contributed to IT/web funding or who has never set the corresponding date in their account profile. The second item is their depositor status which will be one of a depositor, not a depositor, not prepared to answer or undefined. The latter case means that they have never entered that information in their account profile page.

The purpose of showing this extra information so as to more easily be able to see who's who. The same (and more) information can be seen by clicking on a user-name where shown as author of a post.

Email templates

Further changes to email templates - all notification messages should now be appearing properly formatted, though there may still be minor issues.

Why all the effort?

  • Messages previously had very basic format. It was previously not easy to see who had posted the message referred to and it was not easy to see how to control subscription options or unsubscribe.
  • As many DAG members may drift away as a result of DCS payments, the subscriptions system is a way that they can choose to receive automatic notifications from the site without being bombarded with emails. A digest/summary version (one message summarising all new posts) is planned.
  • DST and others need a way of "broadcasting" important messages. Previously the system used provided no facility for individuals to "opt out" other than to delete their account on the site.

If anybody has suggestions for for further improvement to messages please let me know. I am thinking that perhaps all messages should include a summary of key posts/threads on the site. But first we need a way of determining which posts/threads might be regarded as key.

Message templates improved

Message templates for subscription notifications are generally better format and so easier to read. They now include a more complete set of links in the message footer to help people know how to change their subscription settings - particularly relevant to those who don't visit the site often or worse still have no idea why they're receiving the mail (they tend to email me to ask!) The messages also now include links to the original, and links to the author's profile page.

I have tested the generated links and they seem to work, but since they are necessarily all different depending on who the author and who is receiving the message, the testing done is limited.

The notifications for Group-based notifications posts are still however, as they are a completely separate set of templates.

Please note I am re-configuring the templates which are used to generate subscription notification emails to try to improve ease of reading and fix a few minor glitches. However, since it's quite difficult to test and there are many combinations with different types of update and different types of content, it's possible that some messages may arrive wrongly formatted. No need to inform me as I receive them myself too, but until I see them I won't know that it's wrong.

When adding "news Item" posts

  • ng
  • 11/10/08 31/12/20
  • a depositor
  • Offline
  • Thu, 09/07/2009 - 12:56

To avoid duplicate posts as News items, the system now checks to see if that item has already been posted. It does this by checking the content of the url (link) field entered against all prior entries. It does not check urls which may be entered into the text description of the item.

This is done because the News item feature is very useful, but members had no easy way of knowing whether an article had already been posted other than manually checking title/description or the target page.

Our server appeared to have crashed tonight at around 20:44 UK time. It was completely dead, not even responding to ping (a very basic test, something akin to checking for a heartbeat.). A forced reboot was required to recover (never a good thing) and that was around 23:00 UK time. It is possible that there may be knock on effects such as loss of posts (especially those made immediately prior to the crash.)

Hi, ng.

Too many emails, too little time, I regret!
Please excuse me not playing any more - the IOM will give me my remaining £1,600 at some stage by some method, I'm sure. Although the recent wad of paperwork is as incomprehensible as ever!

I can only offer my moral support for those remaining in deep poo, but sadly this has all got FAR too complicated ... and I simply cannot afford the time to read all the various counter-points, let alone analyse them properly.

Best wishes, Sir. I'm still willing to contribute to the IT fund until - whenever.

In recognition that some members (e.g. DST and HNW group members) may want to tell people something about their background, objectives, general views etc, there is now a place to put such information. If entered it will become visible when you click on a user's name (e.g. where shown as author of a post) as About me.

In general I would say providing some background information will help others and develop better trust and understanding between members. However please do take note of the warning shown ion that section which says: Please note that this information will be visible to all other registered site users, and since anybody can register, that is effectively the public in general. We advise against providing information which would help identify you unless you are absolutely sure that you know what you're doing.

How to do it

To enter your About me information you need to edit your account settings. Go to account, edit, optional or click here.

ng: Since your latest interventions on the site, most posts now appear - for me at least - with large blank spaces at the end (in some cases as long as the message itself), making it much more difficult and time-consuming to scan down to find the new posts. I did not have this problem before this week. It(s really quite frustrating! Is it just me -or are others experiencing this?

Are you able to send me a screen-shot? I don't think its a related problem, and certainly isn't what I see here. Try doing a full browser refresh (hold down the Ctrl key and press the F5 key). If the problem persists, please try a different browser. Firefox is always my recommendation, for both functionality and security, especially if you use the available NoScript add-on.

Thanks for your quick reply. I think you are right that it is a browser problem. It appears to be a new problem of 'affichage' with Safari which is my preferred (usual) browser (with MAC OS10). It worked fine up to now, but they have just done an update (with quite unnecessary fancy presentation of favourites!) - so I guess they've messed up somewhere:) If I print an offending page or save as pdf, it looks perfect and I don't know any other way to do a 'screen shot' ! I don't think your Ctr + F5 key business works on MAC; just refreshing the page makes no difference. Is there anything else I can try (without risking losing all my Safari favourites, stored passwords etc)?

However, I do have Firefox and you are right - it works fine there. So if all else fails I guess I'll just have to go over to Firefox for this site at least. Irritating though because I'm all set up with favourites etc on Safari and would prefer to stick with one browser for everything.

Well, it looks like I failed to achieve what I set out to do yesterday - the glossary feature is still interfering with outgoing notification messages - what happens is the terms description gets inserted into the message, making it rather difficult to read. So, I'm going to try again, but if I can't persuade the glossary feature to play ball, I'll have to turn it off again.

Was a couple of days ago but I changed the glossary configuration again and now its working well both in the web-based view and notifications emails. In the web-view you can float the mouse pointer and see a short description of the term, or click the link to go to the glossary entry. In notification emails you get a link to the glossary entry on the site.

Reminder: Anybody can currently create and edit (i.e. improve) the glossary entries. Do so from the links shown at the top of the glossary page. If you edit an existing entry the old version is kept automatically, so there's no danger of you doing irreparable damage!

Why not simply having a link to the Glossary (KISS principle …)? By now, most of us should be used with the terms and there are not that many newcomers. We love the automation and appreciate your work but I am sure there are you could use the time for better features....

The problem is not really in the glossary feature, which works fine, but in the notifications feature, specifically for group based content. It should not attempt to include the glossary lookup, but nonetheless it does. This would appear to be a bug/limitation as I can't see any way of stopping it. But you're right, including it as a link rather than a pop-up may work, as that should work in the outgoing message as well as on the site. I'll try.

Whilst its true that regular users here don't really need the glossary feature, more occasional users find it very useful. You may have seen the post All those lovely abbreviations. The problem is that new ones can come into use at any time. CC is one of the newest I've noticed. In a different context I would have imagined it meant credit card.

  • The Glossary has been reactivated. So you will see "pop up" descriptions of common names, terms and phrases if you float your mouse over them. e.g: DAG

  • Emails which are sent out as part of the notifications/subscriptions feature are now in HTML format. Put simply that means they will include formatting such as bold and italic text, and in general will show information in a similar format to the posts on the site which they refer to.

These two were actually related - the glossary feature had to be previously turned off as we didn't have a sufficiently versatile configuration for messaging - the result was that glossary terms in outgoing messages messed things up.
