I seem to be mentioning this topic a lot recently, and some people might wonder if there's some kind of inherent risk here. No, not particularly - all these warnings are along the same lines of "unplug your TV before you go to bed" or "leave your car in gear when parked on a hill in case the handbrake fails" - just sensible things to do even the the risk is small, to make it even smaller.

Here are a few general tips, which apply here and to other web-sites and internet services:

  • Don't use your real name as your user name, nor any name which might allow your real name to be guessed.
  • Use a strong password - the system warns you about this when you register or change your password. Basically use a password which is at least six characters long, a mix of letters and numbers, some (but not all) capital letters, and one or two punctuation marks or symbols such as !, $, % etc.
  • Don't use the same user-name nor password here as on any other system.
  • Don't give your password to anyone else (I will never ask for it and nor should any other DAG member.)
  • Don't post personal information in the forums (phone number, address, etc.)
  • If you enter into communication with another member (e.g. by phone, email) think carefully before giving them any personal information - make sure you feel comfortable with the level of trust you have with that person.
