In the short-term, I've finally admitted defeat and set this up.

Update: let's apply a little technology - for PayPal donations:

If you are unable to use PayPal for whatever reason - please send a blank email to it-donations@ksfiomdepositors.org - you should receive an automated reply with further information. However, please try to use PayPal as it makes things much easier for me.

I do hope they're happening quietly in the background ... ng?

When I made a donation I completed the details which were requested - email address, postal address and name (real). I made my payment by visa and therefore these details are normally required. Is this incorrect - could I have left them blank? My burning question is why include these fields if they should not be completed?? AND WHY do I always have problems with the CAPTCHA code.

To try to cover some of the points raised:

  • The PayPal system doesn't seem to like it if your account with them is registered in one country but you access it from a different country in order to make a payment - what usually happens is that the payment ultimately gets returned to its origin. This makes perfect sense from a security point of view - I think it has to be accepted as a limitation for good reasons.

  • Amounts and number of people donating - To date, 94 people have donated. Of those, 23 people have donated twice and one person has donated three times. I would feel more relaxed if it were a larger number of people, smaller sums, and more regular - that would allow me to plan more easily.

  • Acknowledgment of donations - you should receive these automatically from the PayPal system. Also, your PayPal account has a history function that allows you to see payments made (and received) over a period of several years. For this reason also I would prefer donations to be made by PayPal than bank transfer - it's much easier for me to see the history.

  • As before, I would feel much more comfortable to be able to invoice the DAG on a professional basis, but that's fraught with difficulty - the DAG is not an entity.

  • I hope that those of you who have tried out the "technical support" element feel that have received good service. Again, all members are free to email me with technical questions, in general I reply within a few hours (depending on time of day of course) and often much quicker.

  • Also as before, the "keys" to the DAG websites are available to anyone who wants to take over, either on a voluntary or professional basis - please make a proposal here on the site, or by email to me. I will warn you its a stressful job, never knowing how long it will go on for, trying to balance keeping the costs down while providing good service levels, privacy and security against practicality, and trying to correctly distribute time spent here with other income earning activities. Dealing with non-IT literate members can be very stressful too, but that's not a complaint!

  • For those that have recently joined or for other reasons haven't seen my older posts on this topic, when I originally got involved in the DAG I had imagined perhaps a month of work, and set myself an absolute limit of two months - which I was fully prepared to do on a purely voluntary basis. As we know, things are going much more slowly than we would have hoped, and I'm kind of stuck with this - can't really take on anything else other than bits and pieces (which I am doing) without first disinvolving myself here. Again, anybody else who wants to take this on, please come forward.

Thanks for donations to date, I trust you all feel you're getting good value for money.

I've emailed ng and asked him to join in the discussion - I just assumed the role of "Duty Beggar".

It's basically up to him how he wants funds transferred, IMO.
However, hopefully he'll be here later to tell us all how to help ... because we should, if we can!

I doubt we'll ever get anything like a total approaching what he deserves, because there are so many out there in deep financial brown stuff. However, those of us who are a still a bit solvent ought, IMO, to consider dropping the cost of a decent bottle into the pot occasionally ... or even NOW ;-)

Thanks again, people!

BUT much earlier, in December, I sent £200 to the legal fund. A month later, Paypal told me that it had not been collected and sent it back to me. I'd like to re-send. Can you tell us how much is currently needed for legal expenses? And alert those who check Paypal money to collect it?

Thanks for the reminder, I have just donated again.
It is our life-line.

A thought, and I have not mentioned this to NG.
At some time all this is going to be over and we all get back to other matters.
NG has largely given up his life to run this site for us.
I am sure that we all appreciate this; surely out of the thousands of us there are a few who in their business need web site support/guidance/help.
How about asking NG for this (once all the KSF debacle is over).
It is his business after all and we can all see how good he is at it.
What more recommendation could any one want.

Just a thought.

That seems a little miniscule, considering the number of DAG members and the small sums we're talking about to keep this website running.

The "donate" button route to PayPal should ultimately result in you being redirected to a "thank you" page on the main site. I have been told that that part doesn't work. Sorry for not replying to all contributions individually, past few days have been especially hectic, far more emails than usual, probably a good sign that DAG activity is increasing. Anyway, thanks for donations, still don't really feel comfortable with it but gradually accepting. I still welcome contact from anyone who would like to take over the IT/web manager role. Salary is not great but adequate, and lots of recognition.

Hi Go Mann and NG
I tried last time you asked, to get the details to send dosh. I sent a blank email 3 times and got nothing back. I read somewhere about checking spam on the computer. I tried but no luck, then my Father was taken ill back in UK, and I had to rush back.
So I am reading your new requests (and feeling guilty I didn't send any last time and wish to make up for it this time.) I have sent a blank email but again nothing back. I have checked (to the best of my ability) my spam folder, but can't find anything.
Can you or NG suggest what I do?
I think you're doing a fantastic job and want to show my appreciation, this website has been the only thing keeping me going over the last (almost) 4 months.
Look forward to hearing from you - I'm sure I'm not the only one experiencing this difficulty.

I sent the £10 you suggested via paypal because I felt that was reasonable and I could afford it. If others can afford more or less or nothing, then for me that is normal.
I suggest you tell us if you are getting enough to cover your living expenses etc. so we can send a little more when we can--as you say, you could get seriously rich if 1000 members sent you a tenner each month(in your dreams)If you feel you receive too much, you can pass this to Diver for the fighting fund--don't be embarrassed, you are working very hard--I am computer literate but I can't hold a candle to your abilities--I would like to help you if I can be of sevice--I am retired and living in the Philippines.
Incidentally, I got a message from Paypal that they thought that some 3rd party had accessed my account!
Good job Ng!

Thanks, go mann, for that.

I need to clarify my comments in that email. 1000 people paying 5 pounds per month would be way too much. I don't think more than a few hundred people will contribute, but just in case: Please do not contribute if you cannot afford to do so. My situation, compared with some, is really not bad at all. The issue for me is that I don't feel comfortable committing myself to other projects, or a full-time job, because I would like to be available to continue providing IT services to the DAG. That said, there is relatively little IT work required now.

I am in discussion with acquia -- www.acquia.com -- trying to find out how much an "emergency cover" service might cost, in the event that I am unable to provide it. I also welcome contact from any IT folks who would be prepared to contribute, either on a voluntary or chargeable basis.

The sites are now stable. We are about to do an update (tomorrow) to the www site which will make it much more visually impressive. The chat site will probably stay as it is, but I am always open to suggestions for improvements.

As some of you know, I continue to provide a "technical support" service by email. Please don't over-use it, but in general please do email me if you have questions/problems with the site. I know that many of our members are not especially IT-literate, and "de-mystifying" IT is something I have spent much of my life trying to do.

Those that cannot afford to contribute - please do not feel the need to email me to apologise (though I am always happy to receive your emails).

In summary, please do not over-contribute - a small regular amount is better as it enables me to plan. Putting money into the legal fund is also important. I would suggest that the site is worth a "membership contribution" of 3 pounds per month, 10 pounds per quarter, more than that would be too much. Even 3 pounds would be too much if 2000 members paid it - not likely, 1000 is the maximum I can imagine, and 500 is probably more realistic (only around 40 people contributed first time round, so maybe 500 is entirely unrealistic.)

Finally, please don't get side-tracked with this. The primary objective is the return of our deposits - the web-sites exist for that purpose.

Thanks to those who have contributed so far - it is so important that we enable ng to keep supporting this website.

As ng notes above, only around 40 people contributed last time. That means that the vast majority are using this service for free, which I personally feel is a bit unfair. A few pounds will help keep ng here, instead of going off somewhere else to earn the money to feed his family. We're not talking about mega-funding; just the price of a couple of beers or a bottle of wine.

You know it makes sense.

OK, I have smacked myself sharply on the wrist ...

... and having read ng's other input, I'd guess do one donation and watch this space?

I'm conscious of how much work can be involved, as I work closely with the Webmaster at www.sgtslingsby.org ... he spends horrendous hours [for free] doing upgrades and keeping things dynamic. He also built a PayPal donation system into the website that does repeat transactions, but with luck Sgt Slingsby will be around long after KSFIOM DAG members have opened the bubbly to mark the return of 100% of their deposits.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have exchanged emails with ng and it seems to me appropriate that I rattle the Begging Bowl again.

I quote the previous message ... "In the short-term, I've finally admitted defeat and set this up - please send a blank email to
it-donations(?)ksfiomdepositors [dot] org
- you should receive an automated reply with further information. I can't bring myself to post the same information here."

He also noted yesterday ...
'Re. IT funding - I can survive until the end of January, partly thanks to contributions so far and partly due to other work that I have. "
"The existing IT donations paypal address etc is still in place. I do think that a "subscription" might be a better approach. What happened was that relatively few members made relatively large donations - about 60 people in total contributing about 35 pounds each on average (actual contributions varied between 20 and 100). But really it needs to be 1000 people contributing a much smaller amount, my original indications calculations indicated that 5 pounds per month or 15 per quarter would be fine.'

Without getting immersed in even more administration with a subscription system, could I just suggest that those who can afford to make a donation just click that link above. Donate what you feel comfortable with, you don't have to advertise the amount [or even if you've donated at all]. And NEVER apologise for small donations!! They all add up.

Keeping this lifeline going is hugely important, and whilst many out there are deep in the financial poo ... ng is one of them, and we can't expect his level of technical involvement to come free.

Thanks, folks. Times may be hard, but they'd be a damned sight harder without this website and ng's technical support.

We are hosted by Xtrahost - www.xtrahost.co.uk - in the event of the proverbial "big red bus" or similar, they are the contact point. Also, stef here provided extensive help in the "early days" and is the only person other than myself with full access to the system. So, in the hopefully unlikely event of the "big red bus" effect, stef would need to be contacted.
