I know other people have lost more than what my husband and I but it was our savings. We worked hard and put every single thing we got into what we believed was a secure bank.

We called Kaupthing Isle of Man bank a day before the whole thing collapsed and we were reassured that they had no problems and were able to transfer our money out. But nothing happened.

We bank in Kaupthing Isle of Man because we do not have a UK address. We have lived overseas and paid our taxes here too.

What is it about the UK that does not help its own citizens but will go all out to help save everyone else in the world! Whenever there is injustice , Brits will be the first to speak up and condemn this and that. When injustice is happening to its own people - where are those politicians who so bravely speak about equal rights and justice.

No where!!

My story is similar to many writing to this website.

My husband and I are not rich people , we are working people who work hard to save our money. We don't have welfare or benefits from anyone. Our savings were for our future when we retire as we do not belong to any pension scheme. Again this is because we work away from the UK.

Shame on people who say we deserve what we get because are greedy expats. We are not! We work hard- we drive a second hand mazda , we buy food from the local store and we shop in local non branded stores. We wear only our wedding rings and do not indulge in luxury as we thought we work hard so we need to save our money for our future.

We are like any ordinary person who wants to save for their future. So, why is it some UK citizens get more right over us? Are we different?

What hurts me most is the comments I hear and read from people. We are struggling to get back on our feet.

I am losing hope that anyone is going to help us. This website is great but will those people who can help us ...do anything at all?

I cheered when Gordon Brown finally took over. He spent years looking miserable because he thought he could do a better job than Tony.

I hoped. I guess we all did. Now - I have lost faith in every politician who claims he or she feels sad over what happened to all of us who have lost our savings.

Thank you again to everyone who worked so hard to help us. Nothing I say will be able to repay your kind deeds. I hope people appreciate your hard work.

I do. I just feel so angry right now at people who sneer at us for banking offshore ( like they knew better ) and at all the politicians who don't seem to care.

Go on UK - save the world but let your own tax paying citizen suffer and die.

PS: Sorry if my typing has mistakes in it - I am just so angry right now.

Thank you for all your replies. I guess I am just at the stage where I do not know exactly what to do. I will get over this moment and start thinking straight again - hopefully soon!! :-) Otherwise I will drive myself mad!

We live in Asia and all the people I know think it is ' the expat's greedy nature' that brought this down. Some 'friends' are actually enjoying the fact that we are broke!! I guess that is what makes me so damn angry.

It is the the misconception of this whole 'offshore banking business' .

I am writing to as many places as I can based on the addresses provided by this website. Believe me, I know that there are many who are working day and night to bring all this to a solution. And I wish I could do more. All I can do is to write to as many politicians and people on the list provided by this website.

People have lost more than us. I am not even complaining about the amount we lost - but rather how we lost it.

It came after another blow we had in out lives a couple of months ago which was quite personal and heartbreaking and we haven't even recovered from that sad moment. We were not ready for this.

Anyway, we will take one day at a time now and try to save again. That is all we can do. I am being strong for my husband and he is being strong for me.

(Rugby7: Thank you for you nice comments - how did you know it was me ? Was it the mention of our second hand car Mazda that we drive ? )

Thank you again - mrken30 , Mekong, steenjp, Chris Pritchard , go mann , Grant , expat , poorerpoppy , Dave Braddley and belly up. And of course - rugby7.

Life goes on and we shall keep on fighting right? Maybe I should change my forum topic to - Not Giving up!! :-)

Take care and may tomorrow bring us better news - to all of us.

Thank you

I am so sorry and I can truly say I know EXACTLY how you feel!
My story is practically identical to yours .
I think about those long years of work - we are near retiring age- we can never make it up and worse all those small economies i have practiced all my life - why did i ever bother?

I too am hurt by all the contemptuous sneers form the comments sections of the UK papers .
Its as if they are pleased that things have gone wrong for us.
My husband calls this 'twin tower mentality' there were people who thought the USA 'deserved to be be killed and in a way some think the same about us.

Meanwhile can I ask you to copy your story in all its clarity to the Martin Lewis page and everywhere else .

You have expressed well the feelings of so many of us.

The fight goes on.
I know this will not help ease your suffering at this moment but a growing number of us of us are working hard in many different ways all around the world to get all our money back soon. Rest assured that we will not give up.
We keep being told that things are happening behind the scenes. We are sure they now are.
Also the media is now looking at our plight. Gordon is under pressure to sort this out some way.

I too am near to tears. Friends in UK have responded with 'but you haven't lost everything yet' etc etc. They haven't a clue what we and a lot of others on this site are going through. A neighbour bought us a meal today the first proper meal since last Friday. Nights are getting cold but just have to sleep in an overcoat. I can't believe the situation we are in but I won't give up fighting. I have been through a lot but this has broken me and I won't give up and I will make sure the people responsible are made to pay for this suffering. Like many others I have given up lots to have my 'safety net'. Would have been better off buying new car, face cream better than vaseline and a bath more than once a month. Someone will pay.

Dear Expat ,

Please do not get me wrong. I know many people are fighting for all of us and I know I should not feel sorry for myself while others are going all out to deal with this 'theft' of all our money.

I thank each and every one of you for your kind words and support and deeds.

Sorry if I seemed a bit too angry in my previous posting.
Worried woman seemed more like angry woman to me!! I scared myself there!!

Anyway, Thank you all of you for being supportive and I hope I can be as supportive as you are. And yes - I read the news everyday and watch Channel 4 news clippings ( web video ? ) on my internet as we do not live in the UK.

Thank you :-)

thanks Expat!

Please don't dispair - in my experience what goes around comes around.
I also seeth with anger that for years people have said spend spend spend. Now my savings are sucked into the mud of this spending spree. For Gods sake it doeasnt take PHD student to work out that if you borrow 8 times your salary you can never hope to pay it back. But this lie we have preached from Parliament every year.
You are angry but there are people out there like me who want the courts to get involved and to send these people to jail !

Worried. Yes. Not surprised.
Giving up? It will take time to sort this out. People are working hard to find a solution. We are applying pressure to ensure that the solution is repayment of all of our money.
The UK gov should help us - and maybe they are. Who knows? In the meantime we are helping ourselves by making people aware of our situation and pressuring them to act on our behalf.

Worried Woman,

You are not alone, from the poll 59% of us are in the same predicament. As for the ignorance in the UK well there is nothing one can do to change the opinion of the Sheeple back home who are too lily livered to go and find a life overseas and rely on the nanny state to take care of them.

Not matter what happens this week, next week, next month or next year we will not give up, anything less than 100% of our deposits back is unacceptable, keep hope and remember that there are thousands of us in the same situation and WE WILL NOT GIVE UP!
