Just donated.
I would encourage others to do the same and keep open this life-line of useful information.
A significant proportion of my pension is spent on medical expences, for my wife's cancer related illness. However stretched my pension is, I consider the money donated in keeping this website running - money well spent!

Just guessing, it may be that you are in a different from there the cards are registered - PayPal is rightly very fussy about security, so if their system detects (from your IP address) that you are located in a "foreign" country they may well reject the card.

Setting up a PayPal account is useful in the long run for all kinds of on-line payments. Much of the hassle with PayPal is related to their own security and anti-fraud measures - whilst they can be a pain, they are all for good reason.

If you can't get it to work and still want to make a contribution, please send me a message via my contact form - I can provide you UK (HSBC) bank account details, though it's not my preferred method - PayPal is much better for me for tracking payments.

Just donated -- thanks for making easy to do it online.

Frankly though, I am not at all keen to actually open an account with PayPal, as quite honestly I have enough trouble with "PayPal" -- receiving, as I do (and I am sure many of us do) FAKE "PayPal" emails claiming there is a problem with my "account", and please click on the link -- whereupon you'll surely pick up a virus or a trojan, as they are just waiting for a drive-by download!

Fortunately I do have a local HK credit card -- so I used that. Thus hopefully I won't have the headache of wondering if any email from "PayPal" IS something I should pay attention to -- or can just delete, and bounce back, in Mailwasher.... [Update: The "receipt" from PayPal, just arrived, and apart from the "Internet junk" at the top of the email, was totally BLANK... and I wonder if that is as it should be....]

Anyway, I just wanted to say how grateful I am to all you guys and gals who have brought about what, nearly four years ago, would have seemed a "miracle" -- getting back even as much as we have now. Naturally, I am looking forward to getting the rest, as I am sure we all are.

But probably nothing would have been achieved were it not for NG, Gordon and a bunch of other dedicated individuals, with all of us behind them. You are truly respected, wonderful -- and, most of all, appreciated. THANKS.

Just donated thanks.
I often think about how we would have been oh so much worse off without this valuable site which was set up immediately after the crash, and how much depositors from failed banks, pre the internet age, suffered even more than we did – for instance the suicides in the wall street crash. The isolation with this grief is too much for one to bear alone and I for one am so grateful for this support group so will of course support the continuation of this website. I have a friend whose brother lost his million or so in the failed SIB and BICC banks (Isle of Man!!!!). Pre- internet age without the support we have he never recovered since the 1980’s - just like his savings were never recovered. He suffered a heart attack (too young) and is a bitter, resentful and an ill victim to this day. Not that we werent all suffering victims too.
However we would have been so much worse off without this site and forum. I feel like it saved my life immediately along with a valium following an attack of “hysterical blindness “ staring at a brick wall in shock after reading Iceland went bust Kaupthing went into liquidation and discovering the transfer of my life savings had been frozen and lost. This site was, and still is a God send to all of Thanks Matt Walker and NG. I go onto the site less often now. Unlike the first 2 years I was on it 24/7, But it is still invaluable to read updates form Gordon on our returns – his estimates always seem bang on the money. What would we have done without you Gordon Thank you, and all those on Dag who have shared valuable expertise fight, knowledge, help and resolve to get our money rightfully returned to us.
Although we did hear of at least two suicides in the KSFOM rip off in the Isle of Madoff our life raft handed to us through the KSFIOM Depositors Group with moral support from so many members from all walks of life. We were brothers and sisters in the same fight - some members offered misguided hope initially, some practical help, but all with the best of intentions from all. Some of us have become friends "around the world . but as expat once said to me “I would have rather met and made friends under different circumstances” - too true.
Here’s wishing all the best and ”Bon Courage” and justice for all and here’s wishing us 100% returns.

Not all depositors will be paid in full via DCS as many like myself had much larger deposits and much more to lose. To us this site is really the only way in which we can obtain much valued information and share ideas.

I have subscribed and will continue to do so. One questio though I am currently showed as only having paid up to 14/11/2009 despite having made another subscirption recently. Should I be concerned, I would not one day soon find that I cannot log on.

Thanks for everythig you do in running the site Jeff Wilkins

A reminder - please join this group if you are willing/able to help find a new provider.

I have no problem with remaining involved, but in that case, and put bluntly, I have two issues:

  1. Who do I ask to get "authorisation" for doing any work relating to the sites?
  2. Where do I send the invoice!?

Legal responsibility for the sites is a further issue. No external service provider will take that on, so how should this be handled? At a minimum there needs to be a contact point and someone who will take responsibility for necessary responses, decisions and actions.

Thanks for the support, everyone. A few points:

  • Just to be clear, nobody will be shut out of the site on June 1st - changes will be gradual, with plenty of time to make your subscription or request free access.

  • For subscriptions/donations, please use PayPal if at all possible - it makes things so much easier. But if you really need to send via the DAG legal fund that's possible, just hassle for the DAG Treasurer - David9J. Also in that event please contact David via his message form or via email to finance(?)ksfiomdepositors [dot] org

  • Requesting free access: I will put a form up on the site in due course. In the mean time, please don't email me (earlier I said please email me, sorry, dumb idea - lots of emails!)

  • Special thanks to those who have contributed in excess of the requested subscription.

  • PLEASE DO NOT send money if you really cannot afford to do so.

Thanks again.

I have noticed that at the side of each posting, there is an expiration date of each person's membership. As we all know, ng is not going to cut anyone out of this forum, so I guess that the expiration date is just to remind us that the extremely small subscription fee has expired.

So if you can afford a few pounds, please donate to the IT fund, as we are getting an extraordinary service from ng, and this forum continues to be our life line, and main channel of information.

I think a lot more of us would have been very depressed and suffering even more without being able to communicate wth each other and exchange ideas goals tactics etc. It's been our life raft and we would all have suffered more over this scandal pre internet age as the poor depositirs of failed SIB and BICC bank (Isle of Man!!)
Thanks again ng, DAG and HNW Class 3 group and all worthwile action orienated members here on the DAG.

I'm sure that ng's site would receive all the funding needed if only people would stop saying what they cannot do instead of just getting on with doing it in the manner preferred by the person who has slogged his guts out for those who have used this site for the past seven months. Those who say it can't be done should get out of the way of people who are already doing it!

I think adding any kind of charge for this site will diminish it's usefulness. The power is in it being an open forum - so ransoming access against charges seems to be nonsense from a DAG point of view. After all, the ability to reach many people with convincing information over internet was how the SoA could be defeated, which was one of the objectives of the DAG team. Only those who have plenty of money tied-up in KSFIOM will bother with the subscription, making the forum one-sided and rather pointless.

Why not forget about any further 'development', 'projects' and 'server upgrades', and use minimal effort to 'operate and maintain' the site in it's current form, since it's current functions surely suffice ? That may not be attractive as a 'business' but I don't think this site is supposed to be one.

The £5/month shouldn't be an issue because those who need the DAG and the site the most i.e. Class 2 depositors can very likely still afford it. So the route to a win appears to be to get class 2's to set up the subscription WITHOUT forcefully blocking-out anyone. That way you'll get some money for your time and the site will retain it's status as communication point for all, and in particular a place for DAG Strategy Team to publish information.

I know there have been various figures pitched around (which I have probably missed) but, assuming the minimal monthly effort required to maintain the site's stability and presence with a bit of contingency in the event of necessary additions, could you describe how many subscribers we actually would need at £5/month? If this is done we'd have an objective i.e. the site can contain something like a banner 'We've got XX subscriptions but we need to reach YY for the site to go on' (hope that's not too much development) - and everyone will know what needs to be done to keep it going. Since you ng have brought this bespoke site to what it is now, and clearly no-one else can easily migrate it to another forum style even if they have the 'root' password etc , you are the one who must determine the subscription limit - so set it according to what you need and close the site if we don't reach it.

I'm sure that people will get behind this. The voluntary one-off contribution thing was always going to be tricky because people just forget about it and returning again and again requires effort (and we're all lazy somehow).

Trying to cover all points:

  • Somebody else with the right skill set could migrate the site easily enough, assuming it would stay on a Drupal platform.

  • In effect, hardly anybody, if anybody, would ever be locked out, since a free subscription will be available to pretty much anyone who asks for it. I do not want to be judging who is and isn't deserving of such! I'm thinking in terms of a simple form that asks members to confirm that they are depositors, and a "tick the box" approach as to why they cannot pay the subscription fee.

  • In the absence of sufficient subscriptions, the site would not be closed (unless we can't even afford the approx 30 GBP per month hosting fees.) What would happen is the site would be un-maintained. Most likely things would carry on working, however they might not. It's very difficult to estimate the risk involved. On top, support requests would not be answered, and no updates would be installed (they are often security related, so not installing them could potentially leave a security loophole.)

  • About 200 subscriptions would allow me to spend the time that I feel is needed at a minimum. 400 subscriptions would allow for enhancement on top of that. Much more than 400 is, I think, unlikely. I disagree that the site should stay as it is - over ensuing months DAG will need to evolve, and the sites need to evolve accordingly.

  • Tracking subscriptions to show a a report of subscriptions received somewhere on the site (banner or whatever) is feasible. I'm not sure whether it would really achieve much though.

200 subscriptions it is then.

I am very appreciative of the tremendous efforts made by DAG and in particular its very comprehensive interactive website. Ng has obviously put in a great deal of effort since October 2008 - this could never have been anticipated or expected of him. Very well done.

However, I wonder if, now there appears to be a clear path to liquidation on 27th May 2009 ( for better or worse we'll never know ), it is not an appropriate time to scale back the services offered by the website ? I for one suggest that after liquidation DAG could issue on-line a monthly status briefing and that any feedback/concerns from DAG members could simply be emailed to DAG without the need for posting on the internet or DAG sending individual reply. If the feedback/concern is a point of wider interest then it could be taken into account by DAG in future monthly status briefings. As the liquidation drags on ( as it is bound to do ) then the DAG briefings could be issued quarterly or even semi-annually.

Just a suggestion but I'll support whatever members want in regard to the future of the website.

Incidentally I have previously sent a couple of donations ( by cheque ) for DAG legal costs - does this qualify me for continued full access to the website after 1 June 2009 ? Being technologically challenged I have no idea how to make payments by "Paypal" but my chequebook is ready.

Good luck to everyone ( we're going to need it, not least if Mike Simpson and his team continue to muddle along ! )

D RAM

It's all been said but I'll say it once again! THANKS ng for all your hard work and commitment. I've just sent my donation via Paypal.

Thank you so much for all you are doing, and I am more than willing to contribute to an IT fund. But, like many others, I am not happy to use Paypal and think the idea of paying into one fund for both Legal and IT expenses could be the answer, if it is impossible to pay by bank transfer or cheque into your account. Can a way be worked out to do this?

Dear ng,

I do not use paypal and would rather pay subscriptions by direct bank transfer.

As there is also an ongoing requirement for donations to the DAG Legal Fund would it be possible to make one bank tranfer to DAG Legal to include funds for IT which the Treasurer could consolidate and pass to you?
Could you kindly look into this and see if it is possible to set up?

Thanks for your continues efforts on our behalf.

Kind regards,

Mike

I too would much prefer direct bank transfer - using DAG existing account would be best if at all possible I´d suggest.
