I sadly am one of those with life savings deposited in the Kaupthing bank in the Isle of Man.
I moved from Manchester to Sri Lanka to retire in 2004 and settled down to what I thought would be a quiet life. I built my dream home on the beach...completed it December 23rd 2004. We all know what happened next. On December 26th there was the Tsunasmi...everything was devastated including my beautiful new home and my village. I almost lost my life but I was one of the lucky ones. I survived. But...I pulled myself together and started all over again.
One aftermath of the tsunami was homeless pets so I started taking in stray dogs. Now I have more than 70...its a lot of work to keep them well fed and healthy but I manage because I used, until a few days ago, the interest off my lifes savings to support us. After the Tsunami it seemed a quiet new life.
Of course, you can guess what happened next...I was banking with Singer and Friedlander in the Isle of Man!! I had been with them through a range of name changes etc for over 20 years…they used to have an office in Manchester. I trusted them.
On Monday I made a routine call…...I dont have Uk newspapers or television here/./.I had no idea what was going on.
When I heard the stories but was told that everything was backed by "a parental guarantee" I was concened, so, following a discussion on the phone with The Managing Director Aidan Doherty, I arranged to transfer all my savings here on Tuesday. He was extremely helpful. He wrote personally and confirmed that everything had been transferred on Tuesday, I was thankful , especially when a couple of days later, the bank collapsed!
But, as yet, nothing has arrived. I doubt now that it will as its probably held in a Clearing Bank somewhere. Sadly, this also affects cash machines …I cannot get any cash to live on…
Now I am here with no money except enough for this weeks food. Then what???? How do i live and feed my dogs. Do i have to watch them starve?
What is the future with no pension and no security…
I had almost 190,000 Sterling pounds with the Isle of Man Singer and Friedlander...no pension...just that. Its my life savings.
Its held somewhere in limbo and I am just praying that a way can be found fto release the savings of thousands of people like myself who didn’t waste their money, but saved diligently in a Bank!!!
Gordon Brown has frozen us on a block of ice. Its criminal.

The piece that went out last night was excellent! Steve emphasised some imortant points that what we must all keep pressing now -

  • that £50k compensation does not cut the mustard. There are a large number of DEPOSITORS (note - not investors) who have £100k + "saved" and will stand to lose their "life savings".

He finished with the plea - "We just want our money back - please".

Good stuff. Lets all keep up the pressure to keep this in the media

How has the collapse affested me?
I stand to lose £815k. This is my life's savings, the fruits of many hours labour and some element of luck. My huge pot of gold wasn't given to me and neither have I avoided paying tax in order to get this much. I am a proud British citizen who is no longer too proud to be British! I started a business 22 year ago with a loan from my parents of £5000. It took me 5 years to pay them back! After 21 years and many sleepless nights and risk taking challenges later, my business was sound enough and I took my first dividend 3 months ago. Coincidentally I took out an investment insurance policy back then which expired and was cashed 3 days before the closure of KSF taking all my funds in it!
My pension, my dream to give my children the best education, my holidays, all dreams now squashed in one single swoop. I am fortunate that my mortgage is nearly paid for and I am only 47 years young with good health and detemination to go on regardless but I have already made changes to my and my family's way of living to reflect the income we no longer get from the bank's interest.

What have the authorities done to help or inform?
Absolutely NOTHING. Thank God for the Internet and for the initiative of some who have initiated web sites exclusivlely for blogs concerning depositors. Also thanks to Moneysupermarket.com for their similar initiative. The FSC IOM post updates on their website (What about the people who dont have access to the internet or a computer?) To date I have not had any written, oral or electronic communication personally advising me of ANYTHING at all. For all intents and purposes, if i lived in Mongolia without a TV I would probably still think my £815k was earning me a fantastic income.
