UK people got Kaupthing and Landsbanki "mixed up"

"People in the UK got Kaupthing, which was a very strong bank, mixed up with the problems of Landsbanki’s Icesave," Mr Einarsson said. "You could say that this meant we had to turn to the Icelandic government, which led to its takeover."

A nice summary. Reminds me again that may be I wasn't such an idiot to have my money in there in the first place - it was "a very strong bank".

I have emailed links to this site to many newspapers and TV channels to draw attention to our plight and also written to the chief minister IOM ( Tony Brown < chief [dot] minister(?)cso [dot] govim> ) , David Cameron , The UK treasury minister ( coopery(?)parliament [dot] uk) and my UK MP . I have also left comments at the online media sites supporting those of you who have kindly been interviewed to publicise our situation .I assume that everyone is doing the same . I am sure that if we all bombard as many people as possible with our plight they will realise that this is an important issue , there are many of us potential voters involved and this is not something to be brushed under the carpet and ignored .

I too have been emailing extensively over the weekend - HM Treasury, my MP, Derbyshire (see details under Contacts) in addition to various mails as things emerged last week.

Let's keep making some noise. We currently have 162 guests and users looking the site. If we each send just 5 mails to important contacts, our cause will be promoted. People need to know this issue is not going to go away until it's sorted.

New Zealand just approved 100% no limit deposit g'tee

Not sure how relevant this is on this side of the world but the NZ Govt just announced a 100% no limit deposit guarantee. As most are aware the Irish did it last week, including foreign owned banks.

It appears we are one of the few being left out in the cold. Many people have made the comment but it is worth reinforcing - KSF IOM was effectively a deposit taking office for the UK operation - effectively an extension of the UK business. We are all defacto depositors of Kaupthing IOM. People are responsible for their defacto partners - why is the UK Govt not taking the same view and recognising us in this way? We are not simpy a faceless creditor on the Kaupthing balance sheet to be written off while the UK Govt uses our hard earned savings to pay off all Kaupthing UK depositors 100% of their savings.

THis is a very important point that we had basically been putting our hard earned money into KSF which used IOM for its tax advantage but essentially collected money for KAupthing UK. This needs to be emphasized in the media when anyone of us is talking to them. It can only reinforce our plight.

While the vote % has been low, it appears to be confirming (95% for) that we should elect a spokesperson. Its also been suggested by Hopper and others, in light of the amount of work involved, that this spokesperson have a team on which to draw. It appears to be time for us to elect a senior spokesperson and his / her team. I think the key issues at the moment are not so much launching lawsuits and media relations, but rather liaison with a) Manx govt, b) PWC liquidator (I can never remember his name), c) and how about Kaupthing parent co. So I'd like to suggest that we call for nominations in these roles:
1. Senior Spokesperson
2. Director Liaison (IOM Govt)
3. Director Liaison (PWC Liquidator)
4. Director Liaison (Kaupthing hf)

I suggest that the Spokesperson be responsible for directing the efforts of the Directors and agreeing questions that his/her team should address based on his/her expertise and - of course - the many good ideas raised in these threads. He can then delegate to his team (and they can take this off line through direct email) and then pull answers together and report back here. As per Hopper's thoughts earlier, it seems important that the senior spokesperson be in IOM. But the liaison officers could be frankly anywhere so long as they have a telehone and time.

I'd appreciate your feedback on this sturcture/ idea. If there is a concensus, we can call for nominations in each of these roles and vote on it within 24 hrs. I think there is a thread were people can post their relevant expertise and I suggest those with interest do that now.

Blair

Can the technical people set up an easily visible site for nominations and any discussions for Spokesperson and team of helpers now please?
Better to do it now - before it gets too late in Europe/UK and people start to drift off.
Bear in mind people in Singapore etc. will be in bed so need a few hours for time difference for everyone to consider this matter - by that time it will be morning in IOM and we should be "prepared".
We should have done this earlier - tho' very difficult.

Thanks for this link Expat. What distresses me is that the Manx govt has repeatedly proclaimed that they are "requesting [the UK] to press the Government of Iceland to honour Kaupthing's guarantee.", but Manx has not reported the UK govt response to that request. Its one thing to ask.... but what's the answer? One of the key thinks that our Spokesperson and his/her team should assertain is that the UK has agreed to act in this capacity on this issue. This written assurance from the UK would go some way to persuading me that we are fairly represented in the discussions twixt the UK and Iceland that are ongoing.

Has the UK agreed to represent the Isle of Man?

It really isn't the case that they agree or don't on individual issues - there is a standing duty and the civil servants in Whitehall will represent the views of the Isle of Man ministers to Iceland.

Unless there is evidence to the contrary, it can therefore be safely assumed that the IoM will get its views put in Reykjavik. The main question is rather how effectively and forcefully those views will be put forward.

It has been regular practice for some years now for the FCO to include representatives of the Crown dependency governments in international delegations that also affect them.

It might be fruitful to ask if this has happened in this case, and if not, why not.

I think the two are not necessarily connected. A commercial solution to takeover assets/debts would not in itself mean taking staff as well. I'm not saying that means a commercial solution is going to happen, i just think the staff aspect isn't particularly relevant.
I feel sorry for the normal staff there. They were really quite nice on the phone, and have been swept out by events as much as we have.

I think it was a relevant point. In my experience if an Administration/Takeover was likely the appointed liquidator would encourage the continual employment of such individuals as far as that they were not a fiscal strain to prevent the success of the new Co. - esp as recruitment and re-training would be an unwanted cost. I agree the majority were very nice - with the exception of a particular guy who when I rang with concerns 3 or so weeks ago was totally unprofessional (especially when I asked where I could see th parental guarantee in writting - I should have done something then but didn't regrettably!!)

I may also be wrong
